James “Jim” Joseph Doherty, Sr.. June 21, 1930 – January 06, 2019 Share this obituary Send Flowers Sign Guestbook| Send Private Condolences| Send Sympathy Card Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, James “Jim” Doherty, Sr., 88, was born June 21, 1930, in Brooklyn, NY, to Raymond and Grace (Calafato) Doherty and was called home to the Lord on January 6, 2019, at home in Loveland, CO, under hospice care, with his sense of humor intact, and surrounded by his family. Jim was raised with his brother, Raymond, in the Flatlands area of Brooklyn, NY.

He attended St. John’s Prep College and New York State University, earning an Associate’s degree in structural engineering in 1951. Fulfilling a lifelong dream of serving his country and flying airplanes, Jim served in the U.S. Air Force from 1951 to 1953 in Arizona, Alabama, and Florida. Through mutual friends, Jim met Catherine Kimple in 1955, and they were married September 7, 1957, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Brooklyn.

The foundation of their 61-year union was abundant love, laughter, motor home adventures, friendships, and especially family, including seven children and 18 grandchildren. Through their actions and words, Jim and Catherine together have truly epitomized the value of hard work, determination, commitment, and humor for their family and everyone who knows them. Jim began his entrepreneurial life in 1955 with the Fillmore Lumber Company in Brooklyn, which he co-owned and operated with his brother until 1970 when Jim was called to the west.

During a motor home trip through Loveland in August 1971, Jim and Catherine were hooked by the sight of the mountains over Boyd Lake. With little hesitation, they bought a house on the lake, returned to Brooklyn, packed up their life, and moved to Loveland for good on August 28, 1971. He soon met Wilbourne McCollough and established McCullough & Doherty Construction Company, building quality, custom homes primarily in the Boyd Lake Shores neighborhood.

Jim and Catherine went on to own and operate 34 Liquor in Loveland from 1980 to 1991 and invest in real estate before retiring and spending half-time in Naples, FL. Jim enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, working on his homes and lawns, boating, and all things involving WWII history. Jim is survived by his loving wife, Catherine; children, Cathi Doherty of Frederick, Jim Doherty Jr. (Kelly) of Loveland, Pat Doherty (Candy) of Loveland, Mary McQuade (Paul) of Loveland, Tom Doherty of Lakewood, and Liz Simon (Bernie) of Loveland; 18 loving grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and abundant Boyd Lake Shores, Loveland, and Naples friends.

Jim was reunited in heaven with his son Matthew, his grandson Kale Simon, his parents, his brother, and friends too numerous to mention. A Rosary will be held on Thursday, January 10, 2019, at 9:30 am immediately followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am, both at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 1730 West 12th Street, Loveland. Cremation will follow the services.

A private family inurnment will be held at Loveland Burial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or to Pathways Hospice in care of Kibbey-Fishburn Funeral Home.
