Obituary for James lamar “JL” “Jim” Towns James Lamar Towns (J L) (Jim),79, passed away on Friday 10-05-18 due to numerous health complications from Agent Orange. Jim was born 10-23-1938 in McRae, GA and moved to Haines City, FL in 1944 with his family. Jim was predeceased by his parents James Earl Towns and Annie Rawlins Miller & siblings Willie Joe Towns, Carol Towns Dunai and Donald Earl Towns and great-granddaughter Savanna.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Phyllis, of 56 years, and daughters Cynthia Renee Anderson and Connie Lynn Smith, grandchildren Ryan James Anderson, Joel Willie Irby, Harly Renee Irby, Keith Maloy Smith, Cody James Smith and Jamie Lynn Stalvey, 10 great grandchildren and countless nieces and nephews, siblings Nancy Towns O’Neal (Kenneth), Herman Towns (Cherl), Ron Towns (Sheila), Eddie Towns, Larry Towns (Sandy) and David Towns (Michele). Jim was medically retired from the US Army on 08-18-1972. His medical retirement was a result of injuries sustained during his 3 tours in Vietnam.

Jim was a well decorated American Hero having received several medals to include CIB, EIB, Purple Heart, Bronze Stars, Silver Star and Commendation Medals. After retiring he started the UBF Organization and Magazine with friends Bill Piper and Bill Whiting. After that venture he became a Coast Guard Captain and fishing Guide.

He also fished the BASS Tournament Circuit. His next venture was to find and organize the men that served with him in Echo Co. 2nd Bat. 3rd Inf.

199th LIB in Vietnam. This led to yearly reunions for almost 20 years. Jim was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, mentor and friend.

Visitation will be 1:00 PM until 3:00 PM Saturday 10-13-18 with the service to follow at 3:00 PM at Oak Ridge Funeral Care in Haines City, FL. Burial will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, www.
