Obituary for Joan Beavers Helton Some would say that Joan Beavers Helton lost her battle against cancer. But you see, Joan’s work here was done. On November 2, 2018, she received an invitation, the kind you do not want to refuse.

Joan was offered a new home that includes a reunion with family and friends she has not seen in a long time, a place free from pain and sickness, where music, laughter and love are guaranteed; the food is delicious, and she will never gain an ounce. Joan left very detailed instructions for Harold and Melanie to celebrate her life and cherish the memories. Low adherence to her instructions will not be tolerated.

Joan was born 63 years ago in Richlands, Virginia to Ella Osborne Beavers and the late June Beavers. She was a 1973 graduate of Richlands High School. She was a devoted and loving wife, daughter, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother and friend.

For over 36 years she was more than a secretary at Hurst-Scott Funeral Home. She was a shoulder for the grieving families to cry on, a hand holder, and most of the time a light in a midst of darkness. Joan even offered grief counseling sessions to those who needed someone to listen.

Out of those efforts, Joan single handedly began the funeral home’s annual memorial service. She was a longstanding member of the First Untied Methodist Church of Richlands, Virginia and served on many of their committees over the years. After moving, she began attending the Poplar Ridge Christian Church in Piney Flats, Tennessee.

Her family wants to let her know she did an amazing job here on this earth and they wish her a safe journey to her heavenly home. She will be remembered for her smile, laughter, her tenaciousness, strong personality, her love for life, family and friends. Joan made a difference in the lives of many.

Her signature gift of joy was seen through her constant smiling, laughter and joking around. Joan was given the gift of life, she gave the gift the life, and now she gives it back, so she may have an eternal life. Those left to carry on her spirit and cherish her memory are: Her loving and devoted husband, Harold Helton Daughter, Melanie Johnson and husband, Mike of Piney Flats, Tennessee Mother, Ella Osborne Beavers of Baptist Valley, VA Canine Companion, Honeysuckle Rose AKA “Rosie” Sisters Joyce Wess and husband, Jerry of Baptist Valley, Virginia Janice Barnett and husband, Ed of Baptist Valley, Virginia Grandchildren Gavin Michael Johnson, Connor Allen Johnson, and Kynlee Mariella Johnson.

Funeral services for Joan Beavers Helton will be conducted on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 11 AM at the Hurst-Scott Funeral Chapel in Richlands, Virginia with Pastor Evan Wolfe officiating. Interment will follow at Greenhills Memory Gardens in Claypool Hill, Virginia. Pallbearers will be Doodle Lowe, Bobby Meadows, Lonnie Davis, David Beavers, Jimmy Doug Grindstaff, Jason Walls, Jay Wess, and Jeff Barnett.

All former and present employees of Hurst-Scott Funeral Home will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday evening, November 5, 2018 from 6 PM to 9PM. In remembrance of Joan, donations may be made to Poplar Ridge Christian Church, 206 Poplar Ridge Church Rd.
