Joan Burton January 23, 1932 – March 01, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook John 11:25, “Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live”. Joan Marie Burton, transitioned from this earthly plain on March 1, 2019, to walk with her Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

She was born in Harlem, New York on January 23, 1932, to the late Arline and Theodore Wilson. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Juanita Wilson and Martha Jones; brothers, Theodore Wilson, Jack Wilson, and Clinton Wilson; sister-in-love, Diane Wilson; nephew, Arthur Wilson; grandsons, Wardell Burton and Xavier Burton; and great nephew, Terrill Wilson. She attended Public School 90, Junior High School 136, and Central Commercial High School in New York City.

After the loss of her husband and raising her six children, she went back to school and earned her GED in 1981. Joan was joined in holy matrimony to Albert Burton of Sumter, South Carolina, who passed away on February 26, 1978. This union was blessed with four daughters, Arline Lenora Burton, Mercedes Julia Burton-Forde, Alberta Tracy Benn, and Karen JoAnn Dennis; and two sons, Joseph Rory Burton and Albert William Burton.

Joan loved the Lord; she had a solid relationship with God. As a young adult she sung in the choir at Second Hosea Baptist Church. One of the last conversations she had with her nephew, Rodney Wilson, was how God is able to turn every and any situation around.

She worshiped at the Abundant Life Tabernacle in the Bronx under the leadership of Bishop Jasper Rolle, Jr. During her youth, Joan was very active in the Police Athletic League. She was known for always being able to make her siblings laugh, but she kept it real all the time. She loved to tease them and have fun.

Her gifts from God were singing and sketching. Joan loved to sing, and she had a beautiful, full melodic timbre. She was a natural artist with her many paintings.

She adored the water, whether it be at the pool or the beach. She spent a lot of time with her grandchildren in the water. She loved to travel, cook, and attend family barbecues and gatherings.

Her favorite perfume was Chanel No. 5, and it smelled very nice on her many red outfits. Although Joan spent a couple of years as a school crossing guard and home health aide, she loved her life as a homemaker to her six children.

She had a special relationship with each of them. They were her life: “Mommy taught me to sing at an early age”; “Mommy was a great conversationalist, and I always said she was nice and nosy”; “At the age of 11, Mommy made me responsible for managing her bank books and money in the tin box”; “Mommy always told me to count your blessings”; “Mommy was so relieved and proud when I got saved”; “Mommy would say, “you still jumping around and I would say jumping up”. Mommy, thank you for turning us into a musician; an educator; a banker; a community supporter; a law enforcer; and a fitness professional.

We love you, and we will all meet you at the Cross! Joan is survived by her 6 children – Arline Burton, Mercedes Burton-Forde (George), Alberta Benn (Arthur), Joseph Burton, Albert Burton (Wanda), and Karen Dennis (Michael); sister, Alice Wilson; sister-in-love, Suzie Wilson; brother-inlove, AB Burton; 18 grandchildren – Arian (Elena), Shakira, Isiah, Jabor, Karima (Travis), Shaa’ista, Thiel, Maxwell, Teon, Javahn, Albert, Jr., Nala, Joi, Tanihya, Zevenia, Michael, Jr., Jamee, and Makenna; 13 great grandchildren – Kymaine, Madison, Imani, Inasia, Alani, Ziya, Rylin, Jay’mir, Xavier, Jr., Kristen, Zayonna, Cirriah, and Christopher; 4 nephews – Alex, Michael, Jack, Jr., and Rodney; 8 nieces – Evelyn, Juanita, Yvette, Valencia, Deidra, Inga, Stephanie, and Celeste; loving family friends – Olivia, Opal, Theresa, Vivian, David, Sharon, Jameela and Suzie; and other family members who will miss her dearly.
