Obituary for John A. Ferro WATERVLIET – John A. Ferro, 93, entered into eternal life on Friday, November 16, 2018. Born in Watervliet on November 23, 1924, John was the son of the late Sebastian and Concetta (Ascenzo) Ferro. He was a life-long resident of Watervliet and a graduate of Watervliet High School.
While employed at the Watervliet Arsenal, John enlisted in the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II in the European Theater. John participated in battles in the Ardennes, Central Europe and Rhineland and was honorably discharged from service on December 23, 1945, and awarded the European, African, Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. John was married in 1947 to the love of his life, Theresa R. Nucci Ferro, who survives him.
Together they have shared more than 71 years of marriage. John was employed, as a machinist, for 46 years by the Norton Company in Watervliet. He was a proud veteran and past commander of the Charles B. Flynn Post #1035 of the American Legion in Watervliet and was a member of the Watervliet VFW City Post #729.
He was a life-member of the Watervliet Lodge of Elks and a communicant of the former St. Brigid’s Church in Watervliet. John enjoyed his retirement years and was happiest when he was spending time with his family and friends. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren filled his heart with pride.
He enjoyed the occasional glass of bourbon, visits to the Saratoga Racino, watching sports, especially boxing, and family vacations. John leaves a legacy of faith, dedication to family and love for his country. He truly will be missed by all who knew him and loved him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sons, John A. Ferro, Jr. and his wife Jayne of Rensselaer and Richard L. Ferro and his wife Colleen of Plantation, FL; his grandchildren, Brandye Iacolucci (Adam) of Ballston Spa, Robin Martinez (Luis) of Castleton, Kimberly Bujak (Glen) of Schodack and Christopher Ferro of Los Angeles, CA; his great-grandchildren, Mia Iacolucci, Sophia and Isabella Martinez and Brianna, Caleb and Lucas Bujak. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews and his sister-in-law Mary Ferro. He was predeceased by his sister Angelina and her spouse Eugene Alteri, his sister Frances and her husband Donald Marilla, his sister Mary and her husband Frank Huttner, his sister Janet and her husband Hugh Rogers and his brother Tony Ferro.
A funeral service for John will be held on Tuesday, November 20, at 12 pm in the Parker Bros. Memorial, 2013 Broadway, Watervliet. Interment, with military honors, will follow in St. Agnes Cemetery, Menands.
Friends are invited to attend and may also visit with John’s family on Tuesday, prior to the service, from 10 am until 12 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 139 South Lake Avenue, Albany, NY 12208.
