Smoter – John F., “Smokie”, “Pappy”, 88, East Taylor, passed away on February 1, 2019. Born on August 5, 1930 in East Conemaugh Borough, son of John J. and Agnes (Hajduk) Smoter. Preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ida Ruth (Williams) Smoter; sisters, Stella Hajek and Gladys Cartwright; brothers, Frank, Sigmond, and Steven, and a great grandson, Joshua.

He is survived by his loving children, Pamela (Joe) Dubovi, East Taylor, Douglas (Margo), Houston, TX, Craig (Leslie), East Taylor and Paula (John) Seymour, Ebensburg; grandchildren, Joe, Elizabeth (Anthony), Emily, John (Leah), Nathan (Sarah Beth), Theresa (Brandon), Sara, Megan, Zach, Carly, Kelsey, Kendall, and Will; great grandchildren, James, John Patrick, Jude, Joseph, Joel, Jinger, and Leyna; sister, Cecilia Kearns, East Conemaugh; several nieces, nephews and many friends. John was a 1948 graduate of East Conemaugh High School. He retired from Bethlehem Steel after 37 years of service as a brick layer.

After retiring from Bethlehem Steel, he became the care taker at Assumption Cemetery for over 20 years. John was a member of the Church of the Transfiguration. Pappy enjoyed wood working and helping his family.

He could fix anything. But more than anything he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren at his pool for cook outs. John was a very special father and grandfather who was loved and will be greatly missed by all.

At John’s request, there will be no public viewing. Private family visitation will be from 9–10 a.m. on Friday at the Baker-Harris Funeral Home, 229-231 First Street, Conemaugh. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at the Church of the Transfiguration, Fr.

Robert C. Hall, Pastor. Committal will be at Assumption Cemetery. Online condolences may be posted to www.
