John R. Cooper, age 73, a longtime resident of Sugar Camp, WI, passed away on Monday, June 11, 2018at his home. John was born August 21, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Melvin and Clara (Chambers) Cooper. John & his parents moved to Sugar Camp, WI.

In 1946. John attended Sugar Camp School and graduated in 1963 from Three Lakes High School. He learned his trade working with his dad at Mel’s Mobil in Sugar Camp.

John moved to Illinois in 1966 and worked as a mechanic for… Read More » the Goodyear Service Center in Hillside, IL. He married Marilyn (Schroeder) Cooper in Lyons, IL, at Zion Lutheran Church, on October 14, 1967. They were blessed to celebrate their 50th anniversary in 2017.

They lived in several places in Wisconsin. During those years John worked for Goodyear and various Ford dealerships. In 1995, they moved to Sugar Camp, WI, where they opened and operated Cooper’s Dam Lake Auto Service.

“If it was broke, John could fix it! ” John is survived by his wife, Marilyn , son Brian (Michele) St. Germain, WI, son, Michael (Victoria) of Rothschild, Wi, grandsons, Corey (Niki) of Port Washington, Wi, Ross, of St. Germain, WI, and David Bronas of West Bend, WI, along with nieces & nephews, other family and friends – especially the Sugar Camp Senior Lunch Bunch. He was preceded in death by his parents and half-sister Mariedith (Cooper) Allen.

Visitation on Friday, June 15 at Gaffney-Busha Funeral Home in Eagle River, WI from 4 – 7 PM Service will be held at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Eagle River on Saturday, June 16 at 11 AM with visitation one hour before service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Our Savior Lutheran Church, 223 Silver Lake Road, Eagle River, Wi. 54521 Their son, Brian joined the business in 2007 when it became Cooper’s Dam Lake Auto & Cycle.

John retired in 2010 and Brian brought Eric Malloy on board as his partner. They continue the business to date. John was active in Boy Scouts, his church, a scholarship committee, couples and Men’s bowling leagues while living in Fort Atkinson, WI.

He loved his Harley, enjoying many rides & fun times while a member of Eagle Riders motorcycle group based in Eagle River. He was also a hunter and had fun trying to get hummingbirds to sit on his finger while they were feeding. He always had a joke, story or Dam Lake history to share.
