John R. Long, 82, of Maytown, passed away on Monday, May 20, 2019 at Lancaster General Hospital. Born in Lancaster, he was the son of the late John H. and Alice (Reidenbach) Long. John was the husband of Shirley (Ruhl) Long with whom he would have celebrated 62 years of marriage on June 1st.

John proudly served in the United States Navy on an ice breaker. He retired as an insurance investigator for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. He also enjoyed antique cars, square dancing , woodworking, golf, his family, and his dogs, Lili and Mya.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Shirley are two children, Jay Long, husband of Elissa of Fredericksburg, VA and Sharon Claytor, wife of James of Maytown; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and four brothers, John Long, husband of Marie of FL, Richard Long, husband of Nancy of Lancaster, Charles Long, husband of Evelyn of Lancaster and Jerry Long, husband of Rose or Lititz. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Alice Long and Mary Blazeck. A memorial service honoring John’s life will be held at Florin Church of the Brethren, 815 Bruce Avenue, Mount Joy on Tuesday, May 28, 2019 at 11 AM.

Family and friends will be received at the church before the service from 10 AM to 11 AM. Interment will be private at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Humane League of Lancaster County, 2195 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, PA 17602.
