On February 9, 2019 John Russell Smith was reunited with his daughter Jennifer, his mother Alva, father Dink and brother Paul Smith. John was born on his beloved Curtis Creek, Old Fort on June 30, 1937 and remained there his entire life, with the exception of his service in the United States Army. He was a spiritual man who had an extensive knowledge of the Bible.

He celebrated his faith while standing on a creek bank, hiking in the woods, or quietly sitting on his front porch. He lived on his own terms and enjoyed the simple pleasures of life. He enjoyed watching “the kids” play, a good cheeseburger, sawmills gravy, gardening, and a good laugh.

Daddy was a “project man” …the original DYI. He loved logging, his sawmill, building his cabin, old westerns, music, tractors, bulldozers and just “piddling”. John is survived by his daughters, Angela, his sidekick, protector and self-proclaimed “favorite”; and Sharon, his “liberal wandering bohemian”.

He is also survived by Angela’s husband, Travis; and grandsons, Austin and Marcus; brothers Troy & Ted; sister, Wanda; and many beloved nieces and nephews. At John’s request, a private celebration of his life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family suggests, that you take time to thank a veteran, plant a tree or take a walk in the woods.
