Obituary for Johnnie Morris Powell Johnnie Morris Powell, 78, of 632 Tunstall High Road, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 15, 2018 at his residence after a decline in health for the past four years. Morris was born in Pittsylvania County, VA on September 6, 1939, a son of the late George Edward and Gladys Payne Powell. Morris served in the US Army and retired from Flowers Bakery after 33 years of service.

He later drove a school bus for Pittsylvania County Schools for 12 years. He was a member of Whitmell Christian Church. He was a founding member of Tunstall Vol.

Fire Dept. He was the founder and lead singer for the Tunstall Trio bluegrass/gospel band, and Country Blu bluegrass band. On June 15, 1963, he married the love of his life, Mary Helen Kendrick Powell, who predeceased him on September 11, 2013.

Survivors include a daughter, Tammy P. Bowles, and husband, Paul Scott; a son, Richard Morris Powell, and wife, Dana; two sisters, Marie P. Burke, and husband, Carl; Betty P. Booth; a brother, Bobby Powell, and wife, Helen; a sister-in-law, Susie Kendrick; seven grandchildren, Sydney Bowles, Brandon Powell, Cassidy Bowles, Grayson Powell, Cristin Cashion, Carlie Schulter, Alexander Colpetzer; and three-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a special friend, Rebecca Boulware. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, April 17, 2018 at 2:00 PM at Whitmell Christian Church conducted by Minster Tim Oakes.

Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00-8:00 PM at the church and at the residence at other times. Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel is serving the Powell family.
