Obituary for Jon West Garden City- Jon L. West, 85, died on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. He was born on November 26, 1932 in New York City, New York the son of Floyd Eugene & Carol Louise (Eidlitz) West. He married Virginia Auber in March of 1957 in Miami, Florida.

She died in December of 1997. He later married Lucille Williams on September 3, 2000 in San Diego, California. Jon attended elementary school in Long Island, New York and high school at Stamford, Connecticut.

In 1952 he joined the United States Navy and served 23 years retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. He served in the Korea and Viet Nam eras on eight different ships including the USS Orion for five years. He was able to cross the equator four times and was honored as “King Neptune” on two of the crossings.

After his retirement from the Navy he worked for Kerr Magee Corporation at Trona, California for 17 years. He moved to Garden City in 2016 from Canon City, Colorado. He was a lifetime member of the VFW and belonged to the Fleet Reserve Association.

Jon loved reading with his favorite author being Tom Clancy. His movie choices were Westerns and he was a great fan of John Wayne. If there was a coffee group to be found Jon was there.

He had a great social spirit and was full of laughter, teasing and hugs. He was preceded in death by his Parents, First Wife, 2 Sons- Jon L. West, Jr & Keith R. West and Sister- Kitty Meyer. Survivors include his Wife- Lucille West of the Home, 3 Daughters- Iris (Ron) Pillsbury of Clemmons, North Carolina, Linda (Richard) Kelso of Carlsbad, California & Dawn Tinstman of San Diego, California, 2 Step-Daughters- Linda Kick of Cimarron and Kathryn (Mark) Lee of Garden City, Step-Son Stan (Bernadette) Rogers of Lawrence, 13 Grandchildren & 5 Great-Grandchildren.

Memorial Service will be at 9:30 AM on Friday, September 21 at Garden Valley Retirement Village Chapel. Military Graveside Service will follow at 1:00 PM at the Kansas Veterans Cemetery at Fort Dodge with honors by the United States Navy Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to Huntington’s Disease Society of America or American Cancer Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
