Poland-Joseph A. Daltorio, 91, a life-long resident of the Youngstown area passed away peacefully on September 26, 2018, surrounded by his family. Joe was born in Campbell, Ohio on March 19, 1927, one of 19 children, to Nicholas and Lucy Ferrara D’Altorio. He graduated from Youngstown East High School in 1945 and after active duty in the U.S. Army in Italy, returned to marry his high school sweetheart Margaret (Colasant) Daltorio in May of 1947.
Joe and Margaret celebrated sixty-five years of marriage. Joe earned a B.S. in Education at Youngstown State and later an M.S. in Business Education at Kent State University. He served as a teacher in Bristolville and Hubbard Schools before beginning a long career as a teacher in the Youngstown School System, primarily at Wilson High School and then for many years at Rayen High School.
Joe finished his last 20 years with the Youngstown School System as the Assistant Business Manager for the Youngstown Board of Education. Joe was admired for his entrepreneurial success and was a partner in a number of businesses including Penn Ohio Plaza, North Lima, where he was an owner-manager from 1969 to 1997. He was also a partner in the Rebel 38 Truckstop, Austintown, and Rollerworld, Boardman.
He was a member of Highway Tabernacle Church and later New Life Assembly of God in Poland, where he and his wife Margaret were active in catering meals for the senior citizens ministry. Joe will always be remembered for having a tremendous heart of generosity in helping people in need and for his great sense of humor. He was devoted to his family who deeply loved him.
He will be greatly missed. Joe is survived by his son, Joseph (Janice) of Hudson; his daughter, Margaret (Mark) Melnek of Poland; his six grandchildren, Michael (Dr. Kathryn) Daltorio, Julianne (Dr. Arthur) Daltorio Russell, Thomas Melnek, Matthew (Sarah) Melnek, Angelisa Melnek, and Emily Melnek; and five great-grandchildren, Silvia, Miles, Clive, and Florence Daltorio, and Connor Melnek. He also leaves a sister, Audrey Crea, of Poland and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret (Colasant); his brothers, William and Carl; and sisters, Elsie Triscori, Christina Moretti, Grace Behanna, Ida Piluga, Delores Mediate and Patricia Simchick. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Cunningham-Becker Funeral Home, 270 N. Main St., Poland, OH 44514, with Pastor Duane Bull of Highway Tabernacle Church officiating. Family and friends will be received on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home, prior to the service.
