Joseph M. “Bud” Angel, 90, of Sylvania, passed away Tuesday, September 25, 2018. He was born on August 5, 1928 in South Bend, IN to the late Joseph and Mary Angel. He resided in Hillsdale MI until 1942 then lived in Toledo & Sylvania until his passing.

He was the younger of two children. Joe graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1946. He then furthered his education at The University of Notre Dame where he graduated with a Bachelor of Architecture in 1953.

Joe served his… Read More » country in the Army from 1954-1956. In 1956 he married Theresa (Terry) E. DeRose of Hillsdale MI. He was a devoted husband and was blessed to have 57 years with “his Angel”.

Joe was a devoted father to his five children. The needs of his family always came first and he was always present to support his children as they pursued their interests. Joe began his Architectural career in 1954 and was licensed in several states.

In 1963 he became a member of The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and in 1968 Joe was President of the Toledo AIA Chapter. In 1963 he formed an Architectural partnership, Angel, Mull & Associates (AM+A). In 1974, Joe was the recipient of the Presidential Award for Long and Distinguished Service for the Toledo Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI).

A sample of his local designs include St. Joseph Catholic Church-Sylvania, Regina Coeli Catholic Church, The Toledo Municipal Courts Building, Toledo Family Court Center, Lourdes University Franciscan Life Center, several libraries and fire stations in Lucas County and many residential dwellings. He had a real talent for listening to and learning the needs and wishes of his clients and coming up with a design that exceeded their expectations. He was also appointed to the Panel of Arbitrators-American Arbitration Association (AAA) where he arbitrated construction related cases.

Joe’s life was driven by his Faith, family and service to others. While raising his five children and building his career, he was a very active member at St. Joseph’s Church and School serving on the Parish Council in various roles including Council President, School Board member, Usher, Lay Minister or wherever his help was needed. He also founded the Father’s Club at Notre Dame Academy and was their first President in the mid ‘70s as well as being a member of St. Francis DeSales’ Knights of the Round Table.

In 1987, Joe became a member of the Toledo Serra Club and held various officer roles including the office of President from 1993-1995. He was also a Past District Governor. As a “Notre Dame Man” Joe passionately followed the Notre Dame football and basketball teams.

He is survived by his beloved children, Susan, Mark (Eileen), Matt and Marie (Joe) Iozzo; grandchildren, Jessica and Ryan; brother in law, Jim Hayes, and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Joe was preceded in death by his wife, Theresa, son, Joseph Paul and sister, Irene Hayes. Visitation will be Monday from 2-8 PM in the Walker Funeral Home, 5155 Sylvania Ave.

(west of Corey Rd. ) where the Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM. Services will begin in the funeral home on Tuesday with prayers at 9:30 AM and proceed to St. Joseph Catholic Church, 5373 Main Street, Sylvania, for 10:00 AM funeral Mass.

Military honors and burial will follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Church, Sylvania, Central Catholic, St. Francis DeSales, Notre Dame Academy or to the charity of the Donor’s choice.
