Joyce’s Obituary Joyce “Joy” (Massart) Schabow, 74, Howard-Suamico, died peacefully after a courageous battle with a rare kidney disease, on Tuesday, December 25, 2018; Christmas Day – her favorite day of the year. Joy was born in Algoma on January 25, 1944 to Jule and Alice (Englebert) Massart. After graduating from Algoma High School, Joy attended NWTC where she was recruited to work at WPS.

She worked there briefly before starting her career at WFRV Channel 5, a career she enjoyed so much, she postponed her retirement several times. She retired in 2009 after 43 years of service. The friendships Joy made at Channel 5 were strong and lifelong.

Joy married Larry Schabow on February 8, 1971 and they loved spending time together up north at “SchabowLand” with family and friends. Joy was given the perfect name-she has always brought joy to all she met. For several years after surviving a battle with breast cancer, she volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital helping patients in the cancer center.

She also belonged to a variety of social groups including a Monday sewing group, Tuesday knitting group, and book clubs. Because of her love of history, Joy became a member of the Howard-Suamico Historical Society. She was instrumental in organizing the HSHS used book sale and was proud of the fundraiser, especially working with her granddaughters at the event.

Joy had many hobbies including reading, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking, woodworking, and counted cross-stitch to name a few. She enjoyed visits to Cranky Pat’s, bus trips with her sister, traveling to historical places with friend, Connie or husband, Larry, listening to Elvis, and, of course, spending time with family, friends, and her grandpuppy, Ranger. Joy is survived by her loving husband, Larry; two daughters, Stacie Schabow and Shelley (Paul) Karnz; her beautiful granddaughters, Hope and JoLee Karnz; step-daughter, Suzy and Gary McKeefry and their family, Michelle, Matthew (Emily), Everly, Elias; step-daughter Shari and Ron Bitters and their family, Drew, Travis (Monica); one sister, Jean Krueger; two brothers, Larry (Mary) Massart and Keith (Ruth) Massart; goddaughter, Londa Peterson and many family and friends.

Joy was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in-law, Dale Krueger. Family and friends may attend a visitation at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2597 Glendale Ave. (one quarter mile east of the corner of Cardinal Ln.

and Glendale Ave. ) from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, December 29, followed by the Mass of Christian Burial at noon. Blaney Funeral Home is assisting the family.
