Karen’s Obituary Karen L. DeKelver, age 76, of Shawano, passed away on Sunday, January 20, 2019 at her home. Born in Portage, WI on September 12, 1942, Karen is the daughter of the late Floyd C. and Vivian (Schleicher) Achterberg. Karen was born and raised on a farm in Portage where she developed her lifelong passion, her love for horses.

In the 1980’s she owned and operated Mountain Pines Ranch in Mountain, WI where she enjoyed riding, training, showing, and breeding horses. In 1992 she moved to North Carolina where she continued working with horses. Karen returned to Wisconsin in 2006 to be near family.

She became an active volunteer with the Red River Riders and was their fund raising coordinator for several years. In 2016 Karen won Senior Homemaker of the Year for Shawano County and was thrilled to be a part of the Independence Day parade. Karen was a wonderful woman and will be deeply missed.

Karen is survived by: two children, Carrie (David) Barribeau of Shawano and Steve (Kris) Vogel of North Dakota; a former foster daughter, Lynn (Mark) Rozmiarek of Seymour; six grandchildren, Justin (Caitlin) Jagla, Travis Jagla, Lindsey (Zach) Jensen, Briar Vogel, Jesse (Megan) Fries, and Amber Fries; four great grandchildren, James and Will Jensen and Lincoln and Willa Fries; a sister, Thea (Steve) Buholzer of Monroe; and her beloved dog, Bella. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many close friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Lawrence, and a sister, Christine.

A memorial service is being planned for the summer of 2019. Memorials may be directed to the Red River Riders Therapeutic Horseback Riding for the Disabled, N6669 Cherry Rd. Shawano, WI 54166.
