Obituary for Katheryn Suzanne Burns Katheryn Suzanne Burns, born January 19, 1947, passed away in her home on June 18, 2018 at the age of 71 years. “Sue” was the daughter of Katheryn Amanda Burns (nee Flynt) and James D. Burns, Sr. Sue was born in Laurel, MS, where she lived most of her life. Sue taught at Shady Grove Elementary for 17 years.

A graveside service will take place at Hickory Grove Cemetery at 9 am on Friday, June 22, 2018. Sue is survived by her niece, Erin Renee, her nephew, Shaun, her sister-in-law, Jeanne, great nephews Michael (“Cass”) and Dylan, great nieces, Madeleine and Cassidy, her beloved Chihuahua, Melanie and “the girls,” who took care of her: Jody, Clara, Natoisha, Shannon and Kasey. Sue loved all animals, but especially turtles and Chihuahuas.

She was a voracious reader and loved a good crossword puzzle. Sue was a dedicated teacher, shaping the lives of thousands of elementary school children. In later years, even as her health declined, she continued to take much pleasure and pride in meeting her grown students in everyday life in Laurel.
