Obituary On February 19, 2019, Laurence “Sugarboy” James Shelvin departed this life peacefully at the VA Medical Center in Pineville, LA. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Williams Funeral Home Chapel. Viewing will begin at 9:00 AM.

Laurence was born on November 16, 1951 to Benjamin and Wilda Marcel Shelvin Sr. in Breaux Bridge, La. He attended JS Clark High School in Opelousas, LA. He also served in the Army branch of the military.

Sugarboy was a brilliant man. He enjoyed mechanics and carpentry. He had a successful business in Palo Alto, CA (Shelvin Facilities Service) over 20 years.

He returned to his hometown of Opelousas, La in 2008. He remained there until he moved to Alexandria in 2016. He resided in Alexandria until he departed this life.

Throughout his life, Sugarboy never met a stranger. He had more relatives than any of his siblings! On March 29, 2016, the Governor of Georgia honored PVT Laurence James Shelvin with a Certificate of Honor for his service during the Vietnam War.

During his tour in Vietnam, he was an engine equipment repairman with Co C 704th Maintenance Battalion, 4th Infantry. He also received the National Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Vietnam Service Medal. He leaves to cherish his memories; one daughter, Linsey Kelly (Ricky) of Opelousas; one grandson, Torian Cane of Opelousas, LA; one granddaughter, Morgan Kelly of Opelousas, LA; Five sisters, Theresa Graham of Houston, TX; Mary Graves(Richard Sr) of Phoenix, AZ; Shirley Felix of Opelousas, LA; Catherine Shelvin-Boozer of Baku Azerbaijan; Nerma Dave of Valdosta, GA; Two brothers, Roy Daniel Dave of Houston, TX; Charles Ronald Dave (Olif) of Valdosta, GA He was preceded in death by; his parents, Benjamin and Wilda Shelvin Sr.; his grandparents, Octave and Annabell Marcel, and Joseph and Josephine Shelvin, one brother, Benjamin Shelvin Jr. one niece, Yvette Felix; one nephew, Antonio Nathan Felix.
