Lee’s Obituary Lee A. Wian, 85, of Mechanicsburg, died Tuesday, May 14, 2019 at West Shore Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born in Lewistown on April 16, 1934 to the late Harry A. and Mildred A. Wian. He graduated from Lewistown High School in 1952 where he was senior class president and was a graduate of Lehigh University with a degree in Business Administration.
He was a life member of Theta Xi Fraternity, served two years in the U.S. Army and two years as assistant manager of the G. C. Murphy Company. He then entered civilian federal service, having worked at the Navy Fleet Material Support Office in Mechanicsburg for over 31 years before retiring in 1994 as a Supervisory Computer Specialist. Mr. Wian served three years as president of the Cumberland Valley Band Boosters Association and chaired one of the band’s early ventures as host of the “Echoes in the Valley” band competition.
He was a member of the Mechanicsburg Club and enjoyed serving his local church, Wesley United Methodist of Mechanicsburg. He served as church school superintendent, chairman of the Board of Trustees, chairman of the Commission on Worship, Chairman of the Commission of Education, President and Vice-president of the Administrative Council and Vice-president of both the Adult Fellowship and the United Methodist Men. Surviving is his loving wife, Elizabeth L. (Yearick) Wian, formerly of Lewistown, whom he married in 1957 and with whom he recently celebrated 62 years of marriage.
Also surviving are a sister, Joan C. Stuck of Camp Hill, daughters Linda D. Stoll and husband Jim of Mechanicsburg, Carole L. Wian and husband Rick Wortman of Mechanicsburg, Julie A. Ruda and husband Richard of Carlisle and a son Stephen A. Wian of Middletown. Also surviving are grandchildren, Kira Parfitt and husband Jason, Lauren Stoll and husband Sam Alwang, Joshua Stoll and wife Jama, Brianna and Nicole Ruda and two great-grandchildren, Owen and Elliot Parfitt. His avocations were traveling and carpentry.
Much of his travel was via travel trailer and cruise ships. Travel via trailer took him and his wife through 45 of the lower 48 and from Alaska to San Diego and Maine to Key West as well as a memorable cruise through the Panama Canal. Additional travel took them to Hawaii and through many of the countries of Central Europe with highlight stops at Hitler’s Eagles Nest, Vienna and Budapest.
He enjoyed his amateur carpentry by building a large raised playhouse for his children, added a garage, bedroom and enclosed patio to his home, and finished the basements of three of his children’s homes as well as his own. He built a darkroom for his granddaughter and a pantry and shower for one of his daughters, and later a large deck for another daughter. When systems failed at his children’s homes, there was normally a phone call to Dad.
In later years he became the self-appointed maintenance man for two restaurants owned by his children where he gave his time and money to help these ventures attain success. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, May 19, at Wesley United Methodist Church, Mechanicsburg. There will be a viewing from 2:00 until 4:00 pm Saturday May 18 at Malpezzi Funeral Home, 8 Market Plaza Way, Mechanicsburg and again on Sunday at the church from 2:00 pm until time of services.
Burial will take place at 9:30 am Monday at Rolling Green Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Wesley United Methodist Church, 203 S. Filbert Street, Mechanicsburg, PA 17055.
