LeRoy (Roy) L. Mastic, Jr., was born on June 3, 1931, to LeRoy L. Mastic and Velma (Haller) Mastic in Saginaw, MI. He went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on February 19, 2019. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a master’s degree in Chemical Engineering and a bachelor’s degree in Math.
Roy served 2 years in the Army after graduating, where he worked with Dr. Krebes, a German scientist. They studied the effects of radiation. After an honorable discharge, he joined the Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI.
Over his 35 year career with Dow, he filled the roles of Production Engineer, Production Leader, and Major Manager for the Inorganic Chemicals business, where he led over 1,000 people. He finished his career by leading the Diamond Systems project to implement the SAP computer program globally. Roy and Barbara Banninga were married in 1955.
They settled in Midland, MI. Barbara predeceased him in 2006. Roy is survived by his children, Peter (Lorri) Mastic, Todd (Melanie) Mastic, Mike (Lauri) Mastic, and Ann (Gil) Mastic-Dominguez.
In addition, Roy is survived by 11 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren who loved him dearly. In 2010, Roy married Phyllis (Phyl) Nerheim-Newman who survives him. They lived in Norton Shores, MI.
Phyl has three children from a previous marriage, Jeffery (Melony) Newman, John (Miguelle) Newman, and Todd (Melissa) Newman, along with 7 grandchildren who loved him as Grandpa Roy. Roy had two sisters, Shirley who lives in Crossville, TN, and Margery, from Naperville, IL, who predeceased him. Roy was an excellent duplicate bridge player, earning his Lifetime Master’s award.
He was actively playing until a few weeks ago. He was very passionate about Lutheran Social Services, now known as Samaritas, and served as their board president for a period of time. Roy was very active with Trinity Lutheran Church in Midland, MI, during the church’s early years.
He was also active in Desert Hills Lutheran Church in Green Valley, AZ, where he negotiated a long and drawn out land purchase that allowed them to continue their growth through a building expansion.
