Obituary for Lillian Atkins Shumate Lillian Atkins Shumate, 86, of 2437 Old Mayfield Rd, Danville, VA died unexpectedly on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 at her residence. Mrs. Shumate was born on November 25, 1932 in Pittsylvania County, VA, daughter of the late Richard Keen Atkins and the late Madeline Crawley Atkins. She spent her who life in the Danville and Pittsylvania County areas where she was a graduate of Climax High School.

She went on to work for Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company (now Verizon) until her retirement. She was a member of the Bell Telephone Pioneers of America, the Riverbend Vol. Fire Department Auxiliary and she was a member of Schoolfield Baptist Church.

On May 18, 1957, she married the love of her life, Richard Lee Shumate, Jr. who died on November 5, 2018. In addition to her parents and husband she was predeceased by brothers, Randy Atkins, Wilber Atkins, and James Atkins; and sisters, Dorothy McDowell and Marguerite Keifer. Survivors include brother-in-laws, Clyde Shumate and wife Sandra of Ridgeway, VA and Stanley Shumate and wife Nancy of Danville, VA; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

A memorial service will be conducted on Sunday, December 16, 2018 at 4:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Westover Chapel with the Reverend David Turbyfill officiating. Interment will be held at a later date in the Shumate Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

The family suggest that memorial donations be made to Schoolfield Baptist Church at 12 Schoolfield Dr. Danville, VA, 24541, the Danville Life Saving Crew at 202 Christopher LN, Danville, VA 24541 or to Riverbend Vol. Fire Dept. , 821 Ferry Rd, Danville, VA 24541.
