Obituary for Lillie Hucks (McCoy) Lillie Alberta McCoy Hucks was born in Sumter, SC on February 13, 1928 and passed peacefully during the night on July 20, 2018 -just four months after her husband, Ed Hucks, Jr. to whom she was married for 67 years from a broken and tired heart. Mom missed Dad dearly – always telling us that she talked to him daily and was looking forward to joining him in heaven. Lillie was the older child of Allie Atkinson McCoy and Ray Laverne McCoy.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Ray L. McCoy, Jr. Lillie leaves behind her three children and their families -Cynthia (Doug) Smith; Edward Frank “Buddy” (Julie) Hucks; Nancy “Tootsie” (Jeff) Billings; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great grandchildren. Lillie attended Winthrop College and upon graduation moved to Conway, SC to teach Home Economics where she met Ed. Lillie taught for years in the Lee County Public Schools in Bishopville, SC.

In addition to teaching, Lillie was an entrepreneur -selling various direct sales products; partnering to run a fabric shop; and owning a part-time craft business selling her wall hangings, quilts, vests, and bead jewelry. Ed & Lillie left Bishopville, SC in 2003 to live in Garden City, SC. Lillie continued her involvement in quilting and fabric crafts.

Most recently Lillie & Ed moved to Covenant Place in Sumter, SC. Over the course of her life, Lillie was an active & competed (receiving many awards) in South Carolina and Swamp Fox Quilters. Special thanks to Frances Kelley, our “adopted sister” for her lifelong dedication to mom; to Covenant Place (Sumter, SC); and all who took the time out of their schedules to visit and/or call her in her latter years.

You made her days happy ones. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Mrs. Lillie M. Hucks are suggested to mom & dad’s life passion: CLEMSON UNIVERSITY (Ed Hucks, Jr.: Class of 1949 Golden Anniversary Endowment). Clemson University Foundation, POB 1889, Clemson, SC 29633.

A celebration of Lillie’s life will take place at Salem Baptist Church, Aynor, SC on Sunday July 29, 2018, at 3pm. Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home and Crematorium of Sumter is in charge of the arrangements.
