Obituary for Louanna Stewart Louanna Burton Stewart, 82, of Johnson City, Tn. , died on October 10, 2018 of complications from Parkinson’s disease. A long-time resident of Johnson City, Lou was the devoted wife for 59 years of Bill Stewart and mother of two sons, Edward Burton Stewart and Charles Clay Stewart.

She loved her many friends in Johnson City from her decades as a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, numerous Bible study groups, and the Virgil Anderson Sunday school class. She was a volunteer with YoungLife, a substitute teacher in the Johnson City public schools, and active in the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy. Lou enjoyed the outdoors, tending flowers, antiquing with her family and friends, American history, cooking great meals, and spoiling her grandchildren.

Born on February 16, 1936 in Plato, Kentucky to Maranda Purcell Burton and George Boone Burton, Louanna grew up on a farm with her six rambunctious siblings—Joe, Sally, Gene, Faye, Paul, and Boonie. Despite a wide range in ages, the Burton children were a tight clan and loved nothing more than getting together at their annual Burton-Purcell family reunions at the family farms and church. Lou graduated from Shopville High School in Somerset, Ky.

, and Union College in Barbourville, Ky. It was there she met Bill, who had come to Union to complete his college degree after serving in the U.S. Navy. They married a few days after college graduation and lived in Florida for many years before settling in Tennessee in 1973.

Survivors include her husband, Bill, son Edward and daughter-in-law Shelley of Arlington, Va. , son Charles and daughter-in-law Lori of Louisville, Tn. , grandchildren Margaret and William Stewart of Arlington, Va.

, Matthew and Anna Stewart of Louisville, Tn. , T.J. Wingo of Dayton, Oh. , and Lindsey Wingo Headrick, her husband Bailey, and great-granddaughter Brylee Headrick of Maryville, Tn.

, brother Boonie Burton and sister-in-law Lucy of Lincoln County, Ky. , and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 13th at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City, immediately followed by a visitation reception at the church.

Interment will be at Mountain Home National Cemetery on Monday, October 15th at 11:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Louanna’s name to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund at Munsey Memorial UMC.
