Greene and Venie Buchanan Greene, in Unicoi County, Tennessee where she was raised, educated, and was an active member of Limestone Cove Union Memorial Church.
Teaching Sunday School from an early age began Norma’s lifelong devotion to her Christian faith. On August 19, 1939, Norma and Albert Britton Clark were united in marriage. Albert and Norma owned a beautiful farm in Limestone Cove, Tennessee while Albert was employed at N.A.R.C.
and Norma began her twenty-year career at Dosser’s Department Store which was originally established in 1909. Norma managed Dosser’s shoe department and, as its buyer, regularly flew to Atlanta, Georgia to attend the fashion markets and select merchandise to be sold. In 1973, Albert and Norma left farm life behind and purchased a new home in Martindale Estates in Johnson City.
It was in this home that lifetimes of memories were born as Albert and Norma regularly celebrated holidays with their four children’s families including Albert and Norma’s seven Grandsons. Most memorable were the Thanksgiving Dinners and Christmas Eve Celebrations. When Dosser’s eventually closed its doors, Norma was recruited by Miller’s Department Store of Johnson City.
Over the years, Miller’s became Hess’s and then Proffit’s, and Norma was happily steadfast. Albert and Norma celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in 1989 surrounded by family and friends. After being recognized for her long devotion to the trade, Norma retired in 1992.
Albert and Norma joined Martindale Baptist Church in the late Seventies and, after Albert’s passing in 1997, their devotion to their church has survived through Norma. The family wishes to thank Norma’s pastor, Paster Delbert E. Storie, and his wife and Norma’s dear friend Cue Storie for their true friendship and the weekly devotionals that were shared with Norma during her time at NHC until her passing.
