Obituary for Lurine B. Little Lurine Booher was born on her parent’s farm November 4, 1922 the eldest child of Willard and Auda Mae (Wright) Booher of Monroe, Overton County, Tennessee. After her father’s death in 1926, they joined households with her father’s mother Aggie Booher. Lurine attended nearby Bethsaida School for first thru eighth grade with sister, Tonita, and brother Artis.
She attended high school at Alpine Institute in Alpine, Tennessee where she graduated as valedictorian, excelled as forward on the championship basketball team, and was classmates with John D. Little. Lurine was admitted to Berea College where she worked her way through school as a secretary in the College President’s office, played basketball, and met roommate and life-long best friend, Marie (Watkins) Clontz. She graduated in 1944 with a degree in vocational home economics.
After college, she taught home economics and physical education at Midway Junior College in Midway, Kentucky for one year. The following year she moved to Chattanooga, Tennessee to take a position at the Tennessee Valley Authority as a cartographic engineer drawing maps of Europe and the Pacific from aerial photos for invading troops during WWII. She married John Dennie Little on June 1, 1946 in Chattanooga.
In 1947, they moved to Wahoo, Nebraska where Dr. Little joined Dr. Harold Hedlund in his veterinary practice. Lurine taught home economics, biology, English, and coached volleyball from 1947-1950 in Yutan. In 1951 she took a position as the home economics teacher and volleyball coach at Mead High School for one year.
She retired from teaching with the birth of her first child Larry in 1952, followed by Steve, James and Linda. She stayed busy with the kids and keeping books for 300 Bowl which she and her husband owned with Al and Helen Krumel. After her youngest started school in 1968, Lurine went back to work as a consulting dietian for the Saunders County Hospital and later also for the Saunders County Care Center retiring in 1984.
While raising her family, Lurine was active in the First Presbyterian Church of Wahoo. She was one of the first women ordained as an Elder of the Church, was active in the Westminster Guild, planned many dinners and wedding receptions for the Guild, served as moderator and long time member of Presbyterian Women, charter member of the Mariners, taught Sunday School, served on Homestead Presbytery special committees, served as Superintendent of Sunday School for 15 years, and served on both new church building and pastor nominating committees. Through the years Lurine was active in many organizations in the community serving as officer and often president/chairman for the following; Chapter I PEO, Wahoo Mother’s Club, City of Wahoo Library Board of Trustees, Saunders County Republicans, Hilltop CC, and many others.
Lurine served as Cub Scout den mother for all her sons and along with Sooz Christensen served as leader for Linda’s Cool Cats 4-H Club. Lurine continued her interest in education by serving as the second woman elected to the Wahoo School Board and was the first woman to serve as that board’s President. She served on that board for 10 years.
She later served on the Board for the Education Service Unit #2 for 12 years. During her free time Lurine enjoyed her friends and family, gardening, golf, bowling, swimming, bridge clubs, dinner clubs, canning, reading, planning trips and traveling, cooking, Husker football, sewing, shopping, handcrafts, and quilting. In her later years, she spent winters for over a decade in Florida with her sister Toni.
Lurine moved into South Haven Living Center in 2011 after a fall. She stayed active there walking, visiting with friends, going on outings and playing bingo. Lurine was preceeded in death by her parents, husband, Dr. J.D. Little, son, James D. Little, and brother, Artis Kelso Booher.
She is survived by children ; Dr. Larry (Andie) Little of Columbus, Ohio, Steve (Nancy Willemsen) Little of Lincoln, Linda K. Little of Wahoo, grandchildren; Sean D. Little of Omaha, Sara (Jason Crisp) Mach-Crisp of Lincoln, Miles Little and Saffron Little of Columbus, Ohio, great-grandson , Brody James Crisp; sister; Tonita Preston of St. Petersburg, Florida, best friend; Marie Clontz of Asheville, North Carolina, half-aunt; Willa Wright of Livingston, Tennessee; sisters-in-law and brothers in-law; Shan Little of Sonora, California, Geneva Crabtree of Alpine, Tennessee, Ruth Brown, and Dock (Gale) Little, all of Cookeville, Tennessee, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
