Lydia Meyers February 26, 1953 – May 05, 2019 Share this obituary Sign Guestbook Lydia Yvonne Allen Meyers, born in New York City on February 26, 1953, was the oldest of four children blessed through the union of her parents, Donald Allen, Sr. and Viola Allen. She was baptized at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Washington Heights. Lydia was educated through the New York City public school system.
After she graduated from high school she continued on to complete a few courses at the City College of New York. During her younger years she worked as a summer counselor at the Lutheran Camp Wilbur Herrlich in upstate Brewster, New York. At home she became interested in sports, especially basketball.
She increased her skills and was selected as an assistant coach to help younger kids when they played in the sports arena in the King Towers project where she lived. She was awarded a number of basketball trophies, due to her abilities, her techniques, and willingness to help others. She worked for a few years at the Harlem New York Public Library at 124th Street and 5th Avenue, as an intake receptionist, and enjoyed telling stories about her encounters with the general public.
Although Lydia did not attend church every Sunday, she encouraged and supported her children so that they would receive their religious training and make their confirmation here at Transfiguration. She gave back by joining in church activities and over the years, cooking for the annual Transfiguration Community Thanksgiving meals. She was an active member in her neighborhood.
She worked with the election polls for years, and whenever the need arose, she felt no hesitation in distributing flyers door to door for upcoming events. Finally, there is no question about Lydia’s love for her children and family. She was always eager to participate and support family activities and she loved taking care of her grandchildren.
In later years she developed multiple sclerosis which slowed her down a bit, and every day became a struggle to walk. At the end, she had too many medical issues which contributed to her passing. Lydia leaves to cherish her memory: her siblings, Donald, Jr., Ronald, and Patricia; her children, Anthony, Tamika and Latiya; grandchildren, Jessica, A J, and Justin; nieces, nephews, Scott, and a whole host of cousins.
We miss you Lydia, but you take care and say “hello” to our family members who are waiting to welcome you. You’ll be okay, because you’ll be resting in the arms of Jesus. We will see you soon.
We love you.
