Marcia’s Obituary In Celebration of Marcia Barnes Shaw Straube Marcia Barnes Shaw Straube, 96, of Scarborough Maine, formerly of Tenafly, NJ and Vero Beach, Florida, died peacefully at Piper Shores Retirement Community on January 21, 2019. Born in Worcester, MA to William and Hazel (Campbell) Barnes, her family moved to Portland, Maine where Marcia attended Deering High School. After graduating from Colby-Sawyer College and Boston School of Occupational Therapy, she worked at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, New York, NY, where she cared for soldiers and veterans in their recovery from WWII wounds.

Marcia was married to Thomas A. Shaw Jr., Esq for 35 years, from 1952 until his death in 1987. She resided in Tenafly NJ with Tom where she raised her four children. In 1992, she married Harold “Hal” Straube and together they split time between Vero Beach, Florida and Orrs Island, Maine until moving to Piper Shores in 2004, where he died in 2012.

Marcia is survived by her four children Cathryn Shaw Holm, Patricia Shaw Sprague, Susan Shaw Hatcher, and Peter Shaw, as well as eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild. An avid athlete who excelled at horseback riding, skating, tennis and golf, she also loved reading, music and volunteer work. In addition to being an early supporter of Planned Parenthood, she also was an active member of the Junior League, served as the president of the Creative Children’s Theatre in Englewood NJ, and as a volunteer the McKee Botanical Gardens in Vero Beach.

Since moving to Piper Shores in 2004, her interests included reading, beach picnics and spending time with family. Known for her charm and kindness, she will be missed by all whose lives she touched. The family extends its heartfelt thanks to Meghan and Maisie Wakefield, and the Piper Shores community and Wayland Memory Care staff, for their care and love for Marcia.

A memorial service in Cornwall, CT is being considered for spring 2019. Friends and family are welcome to make donations to Planned Parenthood Federation of America in Marcia’s memory.
