Marco’s Obituary Marcet, Marco C. Frankenmuth, MI Passed away Monday December 17, 2018 at Covenant Healthcare Cooper; age 94 years. Marco was born on November 29, 1924 in Flint, MI to Michael Ivan Marcet and Kathryn (nee Srdic) Marcet married October 25, 1922 in Detroit, MI. Marco married high school sweetheart Sophie Cuz in 1948.

Sophie passed away November 5, 2017. Marco graduated from Flint Technical High School in 1943, serving as captain for the newly formed baseball and basketball teams. Often times credited with being the first athlete in the Flint area to shoot the one-handed set shot.

Upon graduation from high school Marco entered World War II as a member of the United States Air Force’s 500th Bomb Squadron, Bomb Group (B-25’s), 5th Air Force that was stationed in the Pacific Theater near Japan from 1943 to 1945. Upon his return from the war, Marco attended Central Michigan University under the GI Bill. Graduating in 1950 with a degree in secondary education he began his teaching career at Kingsley High School.

Marco taught in Manton, MI for 3 years before coming to Frankenmuth in 1954. Marco was task with the challenge of starting an athletic program at Frankenmuth from the ground up as the school’s first ever athletic director as well as the first basketball and baseball coach for the school. As athletic director, he was credited with instigating the idea of doubleheaders in high school baseball, helped form two athletic conferences, began scheduling informal girls’ competitions with other schools long before girls achieved varsity status, and served as tournament director for over 30 MHSAA tournaments.

The Michigan High School Athletic Association recognized Marco with its highest honor in 2004, awarding him the Charles E. Forsythe Award. He was also the recipient of the “Thumb Sports Leader” award in 1979, Frankenmuth Softball Hall of Fame in 1992, “Friend of Youth” recipient at the 1994 Meet of Champions, Greater Flint Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2004, and the Frankenmuth High School baseball field was named in his honor in May of 2005 in recognition of his 50 plus years as teacher, coach, athletic director, and event manager. Along with his duties as athletic director, Marco is fondly remembered by many for his instruction in business, typing, shorthand and driver’s training.

He retired as athletic director in 1991 although he remained active at sporting events for several years after his retirement. Surviving are: 1 grandson, James Marcet of Bay City,MI. Besides his wife Sophie, Marco was preceded in death by 2 sons, Jerry Marcet and Mark Marcet, 1 grandson Alan Marcet, and brother Emil (Marcella) Marcet.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin Street. Marco’s family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service.
