Obituary for Martha “Marfie” Baumer Martha (Marfie) Baumer Martha Anne (Marfie) Baumer, 88 of Fort Dodge, passed away on Tuesday, Sept 25, 2018 at the Humboldt County Memorial Hospital after a short bout with pneumonia. Dementia and Alzheimer’s had mostly already taken her from her family for the last several years. Martha Anne Weaver, the daughter of Edgar L. and Mary M. (Mularkey) Weaver, was born May 23, 1930 in Hawthorne, Florida in the same house as her mother.

She graduated from Sebring High School in Sebring, FL, and briefly attended Florida State University before becoming a stewardess for American Airlines. She met James S. Baumer on a blind date after a Memphis AA (White Sox affiliate) game and they were married on Feb. 2, 1952.

They moved many times due to his baseball career, with trades, spring training, winter ball and even an overseas stint in Japan for 5 seasons. After the playing career was over, James was active in the front office for several teams and they lived in southern California and Milwaukee before their divorce. Marfie started a new path back in California working for Friends Outside, a group that helped prison inmates with various needs – her caring heart and outgoing personality were a perfect fit for this type of work.

Marfie’s family and friends will remember her most for the way she made everyone feel loved and accepted. Eventually, the onset of memory issues left her unable to live alone or with family and she ended up in Fort Dodge and Humboldt. Marfie is survived by her sons, James Jr (Pam) and John Baumer of Fort Dodge, a daughter, Julie (Steve) Miller of Novi, Michigan, grandchildren Cori (Ben) Drost, Craig (Nicki) Baumer, Jamie (Lars) Larson, Alex (Natalie) Miller, Spencer (Gigi) Miller, Jennifer (Ryan) Byerly, and 8 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother, Tommie Weaver, and an infant daughter. A memorial service will be held Sunday, Oct 7 at 1:30 p.m. at Gunderson Funeral Home with Deacon Dan Carney officiating. Visitation will be at 12:30 p.m. prior to the service.
