Obituary for Mary Alice Claycombe Adney RICHMOND, Ind. – Mary Alice (Claycombe) Adney, age 97, of Richmond, Indiana, passed away peacefully Saturday, November 24, 2018, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born June 28, 1921, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Lloyd Denzil and Lillian Jeannette (Wuille) Claycombe, Mary Alice and her husband of 70 years, Dr. Frank B. Adney Jr., had lived at Friends Fellowship Community since 2009.
She grew up in Indianapolis, where she attended School #70 and Shortridge High School. Mary Alice and Frank met at DePauw University, from where they both graduated in 1942. They were married in Indianapolis in 1943, while Frank was in IU Medical School.
Mary Alice worked as a dietitian at Methodist Hospital while Frank earned his M.D. After medical school and his internship, Frank was sent to Füssen, Germany, to join the occupation forces there. Mary Alice and her six month old son followed him a few months later, by way of a two day trip that turned into a 13 day ordeal, with only a two day supply of diapers and baby formula. In 1951, Mary Alice and Frank moved to Richmond, where Frank started his urology practice and where they raised their family and lived out the rest of their lives.
She loved bowling, golf, bridge, and tennis and also volunteered in the Richmond community, where she served on the school board for eight years, including one year as president. Mary Alice was active with Wayne County Family Services, the League of Women Voters, the Wayne-Union County Medical Auxiliary, the Tuesday Aftermath Book Club, and was one of the original members of the Women’s Rose City Investment Club. Both Frank and Mary Alice were active members of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years.
After Frank retired, they traveled extensively and spent many years visiting courthouses, cemeteries, and churches to trace their family genealogy. Mary Alice wrote three books on the results of their research on the Claycombe and Adney family trees. Her loving survivors include her brother, John (Libby) Claycombe of Indianapolis; son, James (Melissa Kepner) Adney of Madison, Wisconsin; daughter, Carol Adney of Palm Desert, California; granddaughter, Laura (Tom Moore) Kepner-Adney of Tucson, Arizona; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dr. Frank B. Adney Jr., who passed away in 2013; and brother, Robert Claycombe. A memorial service for Mary Alice Adney will begin at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 8, 2018, at Friends Fellowship Community, 2030 Chester Boulevard, Richmond.
