Obituary for Paula Grossman Gregory RICHMOND, Ind. – Paula Grossman Gregory, age 95, of Richmond, Indiana, died Tuesday, November 13, 2018, at Friends Fellowship Community. Born February 14, 1923, in North Vernon, Indiana, to William L. and Ida Rose Hartman Grossman, Paula was the youngest of three children.

She followed her siblings to DePauw University, where she majored in speech and received her B.A. in 1944. Paula married her childhood sweetheart, C. William Gregory, on December 3, 1944. Following Bill’s discharge from the Navy, they moved to Tuscaloosa, Alabama, where they both enrolled at the University of Alabama and Paula completed her M.A., focusing on speech therapy.

Bill and she returned to North Vernon in 1952, establishing their business, Gregory’s Stationers, while starting their family. Paula began her career at Muscatatuck State Hospital as a speech pathologist in 1959 and proceeded to positions in the administration. Following her retirement, Paula and Bill moved to Richmond in 1987, where they lived for the remainder of their lives.

Paula was a member of the First United Methodist Church in North Vernon and served as the director of the adult choir for many years. She also contributed her time and expertise to the Jennings County Players and several other community organizations. In Richmond, Paula was active in the choir and women’s ministries at Central United Methodist Church.

Paula had a great love of travel, nurtured by her parents and shared by her husband with whom she camped and journeyed around the country and the world as much as possible. Eclectic in her taste in music, she sought every opportunity to attend plays, operas, musicals, and concerts. Paula always combined these two joys by leading her family in singing “Back Home Again in Indiana” as they crossed the state line when returning from a trip.

Survivors include her daughters, Molly Grossman Gregory and her spouse, Gary Stanton of Fredericksburg, Virginia, and Nancy Ann Gregory and her spouse, Jennifer Rodgers of Seattle, Washington; son, Bruce Hare (Sandra Leake) Gregory of Liberty, Indiana; and grandchildren, Jacob Leake Gregory, Elena Grossman Stanton, and Sarah Dietrich Stanton. She was preceded in death by her husband of 61 years, Bill, who died February 27, 2006; grandchildren, Zachary Hare Gregory and Gregory Edmond Stanton; parents; sister; and brother. The family extends its gratitude and appreciation for the kind and respectful care given to Paula during her final years of residence at Friends Fellowship Community.
