Mary Gertrude Miller, 101 years old, passed away at 6:55 p.m. on Tuesday, December 18, 2018, at St. Paul’s Retirement Community, South Bend. Mary was born on July 24, 1917 in South Bend to the late George and Gertrude (Larkin) Hilderbrand. She has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend.

On July 12, 1947 in South Bend, Mary and John A. Lipp were united in marriage. John preceded her in death on October 17, 1973. On July 6, 1991 in South Bend, Mary married George Miller who preceded her in death on March 1, 2000.

One grandson, Buddy Zesinger; her sister, Marjorie Drane; and her brother, Harold Hilderbrand also preceded in death. Mary is survived by her three children, Barbara (Bud) Zesinger of Vandalia, MI and their children, Cindy (Bill) Rheinhardt of Syracuse, IN and Brad Zesinger of Vandalia, MI; John (Laura) Lipp, Jr. of South Bend and their children, Angie (Jeff) Leffler of Rolling Prairie, Kevin Lipp of Illinois, Kim (Brad) Brooke of South Bend, and Hilary (Justin) Johnson of South Bend; and Jim (Linda) Lipp of Lakeville and their children, Ryan (Laurie) Lipp of Southlake, TX and Melissa (Sam) Ells of Valparaiso, IN. Mary is also survived by fourteen great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

Mary was a graduate of Riley High School and a member of the Riley Lunch Bunch for many years. She has been a faithful and active member of the Cathedral of St. James in South Bend, as well as, the St. James Altar Guild. She retired from the South Bend Tribune where she worked as a proofreader for 18 years.

Mary volunteered at St. Joseph Medical Center for over 20 years where she was active with the Auxiliary. She was a member of the Republican Women’s Club. Mary was an avid reader, enjoyed oil painting classes, golf, line dancing, ceramics, sewing, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, baking cookies and bus trips with friends.

A special joy for her was celebrating Christmas Eve with her entire family. Friends may visit with the family from 1:00-3:00 p.m. on Sunday, December 23, 2018 at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 S. Michigan Street, South Bend where the funeral service will begin at 3:00 p.m. Father Brian Grantz will officiate. A private graveside service will take place at Highland Cemetery, South Bend on Monday morning, December 24th.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mary G. Miller may be donated to the Cathedral of St. James, 117 N. Lafayette Blvd. , South Bend, IN 46601. Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.
