Obituary for Mary Jean “Jeanie” Sauer Hendricks Mary Jean “Jeanie” Sauer Hendricks Jeanie Sauer Hendricks-70 of Louisville died peacefully on January 4th at the Episcopal Church Home, following a long illness. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister-in-law and aunt. All who knew Jeanie will remember her as a good listener, a wonderful cook, a gracious hostess, a skilled gardener, a giver of thoughtful gifts, and a woman who always put the needs of others before herself.
She will be greatly missed. Jeanie was preceded in death by her parents, Mary (Brauner) and Gene Sauer, her sister Marilyn (Sauer) Hamilton and her brother-in-law Edward Hamilton. She is survived by her loving husband of 49 years, Michael Hendricks; son, Jeffrey Hendricks (Barb) of Cincinnati; son, Matthew Hendricks of Louisville; son, Kevin Hendricks (Sara) of Louisville; brother, Richard Sauer (Leila Davis) of Prospect, and five beloved grandchildren, Ryan, Briana, Megan, Ella and Claire.
She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in 1966. Jeanie attended St. Marys College in South Bend, Indiana for two years, and also attended the University of Louisville. During her time at UofL, she was a member of the Sigma Kappa sorority.
Jeanie was a member of Holy Trinity parish in St. Matthews for over 35 years. Prior to her illness, she was a faithful Eucharistic Minister and volunteer. For many years, she joined other parishioners serving lunch monthly at the St. Vincent de Paul kitchen.
She was a past member of the School Board, past Chair of the Service Committee, and helped count the weekly collection for a number of years. She also gave freely of her time elsewhere in the community. Jeanie thoroughly enjoyed her years volunteering at the Animal Care Society, where she rescued two of the family pets: Muffin and Sugar.
She also volunteered at Hand in Hand Ministries and Catholic Charities. She was a member of the Queen’s Daughters, and in her earlier years, was a member of the Junior Circle. Jeanie and Mike worked on the St. Xavier Extravaganza a number of years, and co-chaired the event in 2000.
In 2008, she and Mike jointly received the Ursuline Society Award for their years of service to the Ursuline Sisters. In the last fifteen years, Jeanie and Mike enjoyed travelling. They visited France and Italy extensively, and spent time in Greece, Sweden, Russia, Turkey and numerous other countries.
Jeanie cherished the 2008 safari to Kenya and Tanzania more than any other trip. She did not want to descend from the balloon excursion over the migrating animals in the Masai Mara. For someone like Jeanie, who loved nature and wildlife, it was all too fascinating.
Jeanie also treasured the annual family vacations to Isle of Palms, and the many visits to Sanibel Island. It is hard to believe there are any shells left on Sanibel after Jeanie’s many collections. Jeanie and Mike belonged to a dinner club for over 39 years.
Jeanie shared in the love and the laughter at the table with Gil and Sheryl Betz, Katie and Paul Brooks, Glen and Paula Gish and John and Maria Hampton. For ten years, the five couples vacationed together on Fripp Island, South Carolina For over twenty years, Jeanie gathered to “play cards” with the Club Girls. She loved the company of Theresa Moorman, Ginny Whitlow, Grace Sternberg, Mary Ann Van Etten, Marilyn Meredith, Theresa Stuber and the late Betty Rutledge.
The family would like to thank the nurses and staff at the Episcopal Church Home Marmion Unit for their care and kindness these last months. Additionally, the family would like to thank the staff of Hosparus for their loving care in her final days. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 am on January 9th at Holy Trinity Catholic Church (501 Cherrywood Rd) in St. Matthews.
