Ms. Mary Hazen of Oak Court in Port Washington passed away June 1, 2018 at her residence, following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 74 years old. Mary was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 26, 1943, daughter of Joseph and Kathryn (nee Kelly) Bartolott.

She worked as a dietician before being united in marriage with John Hazen in Bethlehem, PA. The couple settled in Elmhurst, IL and raised three children. Mary was active in the Girl Scouts of America and volunteered at a… Read More » local library in Illinois.

In 1990, Mary moved to Port Washington. She took a position as the manager of a group home on the north side of Port Washington and worked closely with people with disabilities. After she retired, Mary still continued helping others and was a beloved volunteer with COPE.

Ms. Hazen often attended service at First Congregational Church in Port Washington, and was an avid reader. She had strong opinions about local current events. Mary loved nature and felt a responsibility to the environment and the conservation movement, helping take care of the world around us and the people who live there.

Above all, family was important to Mary; she helped raised her grandchildren, and loved spending time with them whenever she was able to. Mary is survived by her three children: Marcia (Joseph) Porebski of Chicago, IL, Sandra (Corey) Frey of Fredonia, and John (Cindee) Hazen of Bensenville, IL. She is further survived by four grandchildren, sisters Patricia Scott of Pittsburgh, PA and Barbara (Wayne) Mebane of Cecil, PA, brother-in-law Renei Saquin , nieces, nephews, other family and friends.

She is preceded in death by her parents and her sister Joan Saquin. The Eernisse Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.
