Mary Rose Kimes (nee Ramsey) was a loving wife, mother, baby whisperer and woman of great faith. She died May 30 after a long illness. Mrs. Kimes, 81, was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Francis, who died one month before her, on April 30.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. Friday, June 8, 2018, at St. Dominic Church in Youngstown, celebrated by the Rev. Bernard M. Timothy. Mrs. Kimes also was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Rosalia (nee Daly) and brother Clarence John (“Jack”) and sisters-in-law Dixie and Betty.
She leaves behind sons Donald (Debbie) of Perry, David (Mary) of Wauconda, Ill. , Mark (Sharon) of Bethel Park, Pa. .
; daughters Mary Lynne (Joe) McAuliffe of Westlake, Lisa of Chandler, Ariz. , and Elizabeth (Mike) McIntyre of Rocky River; 15 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, as well as her brother J. Kevin (Shirley) of North Canton. Mrs. Kimes grew up in Youngstown, attending St. Edward grade school until her parents moved to San Bernardino, Calif.
, in 1946, and returned to New Philadelphia and eventually Youngstown in 1950. She graduated from Ursuline High School in Youngstown in 1955 and entered the School of Nursing at St. Elizabeth Hospital, graduating in 1958. She swaddled, rocked and changed diapers for countless babies in the Mahoning Valley during her 38 years as a nurse in the hospital’s newborn nursery before retiring in 1996.
She was a member of St. Dominic Parish since 1960, where she was involved with the Infant of Jesus Prague Guild, the parish and family life committee, and the decorating committee. She brightened the church, inside and out, with her flair for floral arrangements and plantings. She was a member of the Right to Life of Mahoning County, where she served as treasurer and worked on various fundraising committees.
Mrs. Kimes and her husband served as the Cardinal Mooney Band Parents presidents from 1973 until 1979. In 2002, they were named the Diocese of Youngstown’s Knights of Columbus family of the year. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to the St. Dominic Parish Major Appeal Fund, 77 E. Lucius Ave.
