Obituary for Matthew William “Matt” Bruce Jr. Matthew W. Bruce, Jr., 95, passed away on December 1, 2018. A lifelong resident of White Stone, he was born to Dr. M. W. Bruce, Sr. and Flossie Thompson Bruce on January 10, 1923. During World War II, Matt served in the Coast Guard.

He was a skilled builder and craftsman and worked for several construction companies over the years, ending his career as a residential builder with his son. He was a Boy Scout leader in White Stone for many years and helped many boys earn their Eagle Scout award. Matt was a life member and former chief of the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Packett Bruce and his son, Mark A. Bruce. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, William and Pat Bruce of White Stone; a grandson, Christopher Bruce of Farmville and a granddaughter, Cathryn Bruce of Richmond. A graveside service will be held 2:00 p. m. Thursday, December 6, 2018 at White Stone Baptist Church Cemetery.

A reception will follow the service in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Matt’s memory to the White Stone Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 272, White Stone, VA 22578 or Hospice of Virginia, 1328 Tappahannock Blvd. , Tappahannock, VA 22560.
