Obituary for Maynard C. Wellman Maynard Clark Wellman passed peacefully on April 15, 2018 at his home in Ann Arbor, Michigan surrounded by family. He was born on April 12, 1931 to Maynard and Sarah (Ferguson) Wellman in Rome, NY. Maynard graduated from Rome Free Academy High School, then traveled to Ann Arbor, Michigan to attend the University of Michigan.
Maynard worked at Argus Camera Inc. in Ann Arbor, was drafted into the US Army as PFC where he served two years as a Radar Instructor at Fort Monmouth in New Jersey. During that time Maynard married Judith L. Hobson on October 15, 1955 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and continued his service until discharge in 1956 when he and Judy returned to Ann Arbor. Maynard is survived by his wife, Judy, and their children, Wendy Wellman, Laurie (David) Zoromski, Nancy Wellman, Paul Wellman, and Mark (Susan) Wellman, 14 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, his brother, Bruce (Pam) Wellman of Rome, NY and The Villages, FL, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his three sisters, Margert Roberts Casey, Marion Raines, and Eileen McHale, and his brother, Ronald Wellman. Maynard possessed a creative engineering mind and a ‘can do’ attitude. Maynard then joined MACDEE Inc. in Chelsea, MI and helped to grow the small engineering/production shop into one of the premier suppliers to the Orthopedic and Medical Device Industries until he sold the business and officially retired in 2006. Over the years many have commented on how astute and intelligent Maynard was and his unorthodox but effective way to teaching others. As a youth, Maynard spend many summers in upstate New York camping, boating, and fishing and continue in that spirit with his own family when he and Judy purchased their first motor home in 1971.
Beside instilling a strong work ethic with home repair/building projects, car repairs, or anything else he deemed needed to be done “right now,” Maynard also instilled the travel and adventure spirit into his children with camping trips, snowmobiling trips, and travels across the US. Maynard and Judy loved to travel the country with their many dogs in their motor home(s) visiting friends and family, playing golf, and spending many winters in warmer climates including Gulf Shores, AL.
