Obituary for Melton Lee Odom Melton Lee Odom, 84, of Laurel, MS, went to be with the Lord Wednesday morning, June 27th, 2018, at South Central Regional Medical Center in Laurel, MS, after an extended illness. He was born on Monday, November 6th, 1933, in Ellisville, MS, to Latrelle and Laura Mae. On December 23rd, 1955, he married Margaret Elizabeth Odom, and together they had two sons.
In 1964, he entered active service in the US Navy Civil Engineer Corps and retired in 1980 from active military service as a highly decorated Commander in Virginia Beach, VA. During his active duty, he served the country as a Navy SEABEE, completed two tours in Vietnam, and worked at the Pentagon and Pearl Harbor. After retirement from the Navy, he was a Public Works Director for the City of Beverly Hills, CA.
He was also Deputy City Manager for Hesperia, CA, and Director of Public Works for the City of Treasure Island, FL. He was a devoted husband and father who loved his family dearly. He was extremely well traveled with his military career, which includes locations like Panama, Puerto Rico, and Hawaii.
He was a very active member in his beloved church, West Laurel Baptist, where he served as a Deacon and taught Sunday school classes. Melton Lee was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Odom, and his sister, Fredna Rae Pittman (Marshall). He is survived by his brother, Rudy Odom (Jonelle), his two sons, Richard Melton Odom and Christopher McRae Odom (Julie), and his six grandchildren, Ryan Melton Farrell Odom, Sara Elizabeth Odom, Collin McRae Farrell Odom, Zachary McRae Odom, James Alexander Odom, and Abigail Ann Odom.
Funeral services will be Saturday, June 30th, at 11am, at West Laurel Baptist Church. Visitation for the public will be Friday, June 29th from 5pm to 8pm at Memory Chapel Funeral Home. There will be a graveside service after the funeral ceremony at Hickory Grove Cemetery.
