Merle Vickers Allen Eaton, 97, of Owensboro, KY. , died Monday, February, 18, 2019 at Owensboro Health. She was born on April 24, 1921 in McLean County, Ky.

to the late Clyde and Mary Frances (Fannie Spicer) Vickers. She graduated from Calhoun High School and from Owensboro College of Business, and extended classes at Kentucky Wesleyan College. She retired from Texas Gas Corp after 35 years of service.

Merle loved people and animals and had lots of friends and always a pet. She was an avid Bridge player and loved cross stitching and needle point, leaving many beautiful pictures. She also loved reading books.

She had been a 40 year member of Epsilon Sigma Alpha Sorority, and a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Owensboro Country Club, and a past member of the Women’s Club. She volunteered at the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science & History, and at the Health Park. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy G. Allen in August, 1987; second husband, James B. Eaton Jr. in March 2002; a brother, John L. Vickers; sisters, Betty Ballinger, Virgie Stroud, Clara Nall, Nell Furniss and Ona Ruth O’Flynn; and several nieces and nephews including Robert, William, and Lana D. O’Flynn.

Survivors include many nieces and nephews, some who have been so close to her; Betty O’Flynn McDaniel, Kaye O’Flynn Ray, John Vickers, Robert Vickers, David Vickers, Erma Frances Greever, Coleman Stroud, Harry Stroud, and Ruby Nell Furniss Samples who has been like a sister to her; Deborah O’Flynn Brumbaugh, a special great-niece; a stepson, James B. Eaton III of Houston, Texas. She also leaves behind a very special friend and companion, Ray Tretter. Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday at James H. Davis Funeral Home & Crematory, officiated by her nephews, Dr. John Greever of Fenton, MO and Dr. Robert Vickers, along with Bro.

Larry Birkhead. Burial will follow in New Cypress Cemetery in McLean County, KY. Great-nephews will serve as pallbearers and nieces and nephews will be honorary pallbearers.

Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and after 11 a.m. on Friday at the funeral home. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of donations to Humane Society, 3101 W 2nd Street, Owensboro, Ky. 42301 or New Cypress Cemetery, 4598 State Route 81 South, Rumsey, KY 42371.
