OBITUARY Michael Caldwell July 29, 1936 – January 29, 2019 Michael S. Caldwell (Mike) of Charlottesville, Virginia passed away on January 29, 2019 at age 82. Mike was born on July 29, 1936 in Hot Springs, Arkansas. He earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Arkansas and then taught history at Hot Springs Junior High School.

During the time he was teaching he earned a Master’s Degree in Education from Henderson State Teachers College. Mike then went on to earn a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in 1964 in Higher Education Administration and Teacher Education. He served as Assistant Professor and Assistant to the Dean at The Ohio State University from 1966-1969 and then came to the University of Virginia in 1969 as Associate Dean for Research and Instruction in the Curry School of Education and Human Development.

When he stepped down from the role of Associate Dean he taught courses in Educational Evaluation and served as Educational Consultant for Alternative Curriculum in the School of Medicine. In 1975 he became Director of the Bureau of Educational Research and the Evaluation Research Center. He served in that role until he became Chair of the Department of Educational Research and Evaluation.

During his last several years at the University he taught courses in Educational Evaluation and Qualitative Research. He retired from the University in 2004. Mike is survived by his wife, Carolyn Callahan of Charlottesville, his daughter Katherine Caldwell of Greenville, SC, his son Richard Caldwell of Homestead, FL, his sister Cynthia Chaffin and her husband Jim of Hot Springs, AR, his sister- and brother-in-law Dawn and Peter Sartori of Philmont, NY; his sister-and brother-in-law Cindy and Bruce Tipple of Philmont, NY as well as nieces and nephews in Houston, TX, Atlanta, GA, and Philmont, NY.

The family was especially appreciative of the professional and compassionate care Mike received from the staff of the ICU at Martha Jefferson University. In particular, Dr. Frances Ansa and Nurse Nina Dennis offered their expertise and an extraordinary level of comfort to Mike and to us in Mike’s final days. We will be forever grateful.
