Michael Roger Schmidt, 68, of Osceola, WI, formerly of St. Croix Falls, WI, passed away surrounded by loved ones in his home on Sunday, September 23, 2018. Michael was born July 30, 1950, in Burt, Iowa. He was the first of six children born to Roger and Phyllis (Christensen) Schmidt.

Mike attended Titonka High School and graduated from Clear Lake (Iowa) High School in 1968. After a year working as a hospital orderly, he went to the University of Iowa Medical School.

He completed his family practice residency in Iowa City, then moved to Duluth, MN, and on to St. Croix Falls where he raised his family and practiced medicine for 22 years. He returned to Iowa City in 2006 to work at the U of I student health center before retiring in 2014 to Osceola,WI in the St. Croix River Valley. Mike enjoyed being outdoors bicycling, gardening, hiking, cross-country skiing and canoeing.

He was a devoted husband, son, father and grandfather. He spent time volunteering for organizations involved with conservation and outdoor recreation. Mike is survived by his wife of 43 years, Gail Hanson; his children, Erin Schmidt, Molly (Shawn) Tebben, and Ethan Schmidt; grandchildren Kimutai, Emily, Amaya, Josie and Zada; his parents, Roger and Phyllis; his siblings Tim, Dan, Mary, Sue (Heyer), and Paul; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.

A memorial gathering will be held on Saturday, September 29, with a short program at 1 pm followed by an open house until 4 pm at the Dresser Community Hall in Dresser, Wisconsin. Mike generously requested that his body be donated to the University of Minnesota for medical education. Condolences may be expressed online at grandstrandfh.com.
