Obituary for Michiko Macko On October 30, 2018, Michiko Kuromatsu Macko, 92, of North Charleston, SC, went to be with her Savior, Jesus Christ, at her daughter’s residence. She was born on January 8, 1926 in Nara-ken, Japan to Bunkichi Kuromatsu and Hana Tatsumi. As a young woman during World War II, she survived the intense fire bombings of Nara, the loss of her childhood home, and the crippling deprivation of her war-ravaged homeland.

From significant hardship, Michiko developed an unquenchable spirit of resolve and determination that would serve her well throughout her life. She is preceded in death by her late husband, SMSgt Charles Casimir Macko, of the United States Air Force. Michiko met Charles when he was stationed in Japan, starting her journey as a military wife and mother.

She enjoyed traveling to different locations with her growing family and finally ending up in Charleston. Widowed at a young age, with all five of her children still in school, she worked hard to provide a stable home life to ensure all of her children received an education. To take care of her family, she learned to drive, and although very challenging for her, she did what she had to do to provide for her family’s needs.

Michiko was an amazing cook and an accomplished seamstress. She loved to laugh, and her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. She is survived by her five children Elizabeth Jacobus (Frank), Barbara Kerns (Randall), James Macko, Charles Macko, Rose Gay (Richard); six grandchildren Christine Cummings, Hannah Kerns, Matthew Macko, Connor Macko, Alexandra Kerns, Allie Macko; great-grandson Blake Cummings.
