Obituary for Mihalis “Mike” Stefanidis Mihalis (Mike) Stefanidis, 83, born in Schinoussa Greece on May 14, 1935, passed peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 30th, 2018. He is preceded in death by his parents Giorgios and Kaliopi Stefanidis, his sisters Evangelia (Elia), Anna (Mihalis), his brothers Nikita (Vasiliki), Hristos (Rena), and his brother in laws John Karalias and Hristos (Eleni) Agganis. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Maria, his daughters Kaliopi (Thanasi) Pappas, Demetra (Guy) Stefanidis, son George (Sophia) Stefanidis, grandsons, Elias (Vickie) Pappas, Michael (Melanie) Pappas, and great-grandchildren, Kaliopi, Konstantina, Athan, Tommy, Costa, George and Elias.
His brother Dimitri Stefanidis. His In laws Athena (Christo) Christopoulos, Dino (Nikki), Agganis, Vasiliki (Yianni) Karalias, Angelo (Eugenia) Agganis, Christina (George) Georgakopoulos, Haralambos (Georgia) Agganis, Eleni (Costa) Andronis. , He is also survived by a multitude of loving nieces and nephews.
Mike married the love of his life Maria 61 years ago after seeing her at his uncle’s wedding while he was serving in the navy in Greece. Their life took them from Greece through Canada and finally into the USA where he raised his children, his grandchildren, and his great-grandchildren. He ran a business for dozens of years.
He enjoyed playing rummy and backgammon with his family and watching his family grow. He was known as a strong man with a soft heart, epic hugs, and laughter that filled a room. His grandchildren fondly remember the stories often told by those of the Greatest Generation – those of growing up in war, overcoming strife through hard work, and finally, finding a new home to raise his family in the United States.
The viewing will be at the O.R. Woodyard Northwest Chapel, 2990 Bethel Road Columbus, OH 43220 from 5-8pm with Trisagion service at 7:30pm on Sunday, November 4th. The funeral will be at the Greek Orthodox Annunciation church at 12pm. Monday, November 5th.
