Obituary for Mildred Freed Hrezo Mildred Jane Freed Hrezo died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on October 11, 2018. She was 92-1/2 years old. She is survived by her daughters Stephanie, Becky, Debbie, and Julie, and her son, Richard, as well as her five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Born in Vanderbilt, Pennsylvania on February 6, 1926, Mildred moved to Winter Haven, Florida in 1947 with her late husband Stephen. A registered nurse, she provided private duty nursing until the arrival of her first child when she set about raising her family and becoming active in St. Joseph’s Church where she would ultimately serve as organist for over 25 years. As a mother, she was active in Girl and Boy Scouting, as well as community events and church activities.
In her later years she took an active role in the Winter Haven Hospital Auxiliary, serving as president of that organization and working regularly as an Auxiliary volunteer at the hospital information desk. Mildred’s life can’t be summed up solely as an exemplary wife, mother, and community volunteer; she was a firm but loving mother, quick to laugh, and her beautiful smile sustained her family until the end. She loved roller coasters, travel, and music, and a photo of her in her late 80’s on a sled at Mt.
Lassen, California confirms her adventurous spirit. She was a woman of great faith, and her example of selfless devotion as organist at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winter Haven is evidenced in the countless Sundays, weddings, and funerals in which her music brought a harmonious spirituality to each service whether happy or sad. Although it has been several years since she has been able to attend, her devotion to the parish of St. Joseph’s never faltered.
Preceded in death by her late husband Stephen and son Stephen, Mildred was a shining example of the loving mother, always patient, caring, and steadfast in the nurturing of her family. Her family and friends will miss her, but her influence will live on in her children, and the memory of the joy and love she shared will never fade. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, a donation be made in her name to Cornerstone Hospice, St. Joseph’s Church, or Winter Haven Hospital Auxiliary.
A special thanks to the Platinum Team at Cornerstone Hospice, and caregivers Rita, Alicia, and Alice. A Funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, 10:00 AM at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Winter Haven. Interment will follow at Lakeside Memorial Park.
