Saginaw Twp. , Michigan Mona Thiel passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 23, 2019 with her loving children at her side. She was born in Saginaw, Michigan on June 7, 1932 and was a lifelong resident.

She graduated from Saginaw High School in 1950. She then entered Saginaw General Hospital School of Nursing and earned her Registered Nurse Degree in 1953. She loved nursing and especially pediatrics.

She worked at Children’s Hospital in Detroit until she met and married Robert Thiel. They subsequently had eight children in 10 years, which she loved to brag about and astonished her friends. She never complained or ever said that that having eight was easier than having two because she never had to hear “I’m bored”.

Mona could entertain at lengths about her funny experiences with them and their two dogs. Their home was always a haven for their friends and neighbors. After retiring, Mona’s enjoyment in gardening reached new heights.

Her flower gardens were very large with a variety of plants and colors. She enjoyed giving bouquets to her acquaintances. Mona was a CASA and was very proud of being named CASA of the year in 2010.

She was also a member of OLLI at SVSU. Her other hobbies included playing bridge and she was an avid reader. She traveled extensively both in the United States and abroad.

She will be sadly missed by her children, Tom (Tammy) Thiel, Gladstone; Joseph (Kellie Gerdau) Thiel, Saginaw; Daniel (Jeanette) Thiel, Saginaw; Suzanne (David Luzenski) Thiel, Milford; James Thiel, Saginaw; Kathleen (Robert) Allan, Lowell, Massachusetts; Diane (Mark) Moormann, Denver, Colorado; many grandchildren, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mona was preceded in death by her son, Robert Thiel, Jr. Honoring Mona’s wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 4, 2019 at The Snow Funeral Home, 3775 N. Center Rd.

, (between Shattuck and McCarty). Friends may visit at the funeral home on Saturday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to American Humane Society or Saginaw Valley State University –OLLI.
