Morris Granville Scherer, 98, of Binghamton, NY died peacefully, albeit quite reluctantly, at the New York State Veteran’s Home in Oxford, NY after a short period of declining health. He was predeceased by his wife of sixty years, Ruth, and is survived by his children Carole, Sandra (Robert) and George (Maggie) in addition to numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Born Oct.

6, 1919 in Allentown, PA, Morrie moved to Binghamton in his teens. He worked locally at Ansco (GAF) for over forty years and was especially proud of being instrumental in establishing their first credit union. During World War II, he was drafted early and spent five years in the South Pacific as a plane spotter.

Morrie was the leader of Boy Scout Troop 23 for many years. He and his wife Ruth were active members of Redeemer Lutheran Church. He was an avid golfer, outdoorsman, woodworker and baseball fan.

Traveling first all across the country with his family in a tiny travel trailer, he later enjoyed touring far and wide overseas, including a trip to China at the age of 90. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at the NYS Veteran’s Home in Oxford, NY for the excellent care Morrie received during his stay. Friends and family are invited to call at Ernest H. Parsons Funeral Home, 71 Main St., Binghamton, NY on Friday, June 8th from 10-11a.m. At Morrie’s request there will be a private interment at Vestal Hills Memorial Park .

In lieu of flowers, Morrie would like donations to be sent to The Boys and Girls Club of Binghamton, NY or the Redeemer Lutheran Church of Binghamton, NY.
