On December 25, 1954, Nellie had the wonderful opportunity to marry her high school sweetheart, United States Air Force Airman, Kenneth “Ken” Waggoner. They remained happily married for more than 54 years until Ken’s passing in January 2010. From almost the day they were married, Ken and Nellie traveled the world.
As Ken served our country, Nellie served her family by raising three wonderful children, managing the homestead and being Ken’s “Rock” supporter. Their travels took them to be stationed at Air Force Bases, both domestically and internationally. Domestically, they were stationed in Wyoming, Hawaii, Ohio, Nevada, Michigan, Florida and Indiana.
International travels gave Nellie the opportunity to not only live in England and Turkey, but also travel to Spain, Greece and Israel. Nellie truly showed her tenacity, resilience and ability to adapt and change through the multiple moves across the globe, all while raising her children. In 1974, after retiring from the Air Force, Ken and Nellie moved back to their family in Indiana.
Nellie was a very accomplished seamstress. These skills came in very handy, many times, as life necessitated she make clothing for her family. Other times, her sewing skills allowed her to make holiday matching outfits for her daughters (which they truly loved).
Her quilting skills were born of the time honored traditions there handed down from generation to generation. The quality and workmanship of her quilting drew the compliments of many. Her quilts would later cover the beds of all her children and grandchildren.
Nellie also loved her other hobbies, such as bowling and playing cards (especially Euchre), as it was a wonderful avenue to get together, socialize and have a great time with family and friends. Nellie also liked quiet time in her flower or vegetable gardens, ensuring that her home looked warm and inviting with her flowers and put plenty of food on the table for her family. She canned the best “Bread & Butter” pickles this side of the Mississippi.
During her life, she also had the opportunity to work outside the home at the Shirt Factory in Seymour, American Stationary in Peru, Indiana and finally retiring from Sylvania in Seymour. However, her number one love and priority was her husband and children. She devoted her entire life and love to her family so that they could have clothes on their backs, food on the table and God in their hearts.
Nellie was a small town girl, with a kind soul, that got to travel the world. She was a loving wife and a selfless, caring mother who will truly be missed. She is survived by her children, Roger (Jane) Waggoner, Cindy (Siomara Atchortua) Waggoner and Yvonne (Mark) Willman; grandchildren, Shannel (Steve) Lose, Jill (Forrest) Willey, Erin (Mitch) Ison, Adelea (Chris) Dobbins, Makala Willman, Job (Aurora) Willman and Daniel (Courtney Steinkamp) Waggoner; great-grandchildren, Oliver Lose, Eva and Alan Willey and Evelyn Waggoner; sisters, Shirley (Pete) Reed and Ruby (Leonard) Wright Brown Wolfgang; and brother-in-law, David Waggoner.
Nellie was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband; beloved in-laws, Hezzie (Rowena) Waggoner; sister-in-law, Sharon Waggoner; and brother-in-law, Ronald Waggoner.
