Mrs. Osia Mae (nee Cooper) Evans, of Lorain, Ohio left her earthly life on August 31, 2018 at the age of 95. She was born to the union of Oscar and Ella (White) Cooper on October 17, 1922 in Cincinnati, Oho. In 1945, she and her late husband James Evans Sr., came to Lorain, where they raised their three children.

Mrs. Evans was one of the first African-Americans to graduate from the St. Joseph’s School of Nursing, becoming a License Practical Nurse. Later she attended the Lorain Business College and became the Office Administrator for the Carter Funeral Home, where she worked for more than 30 years. While her children were young, she was very active in the PTA, and was a co-founder of a Brownie/Girl Scout Troop at Charleston Elementary School.

She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother. Mrs. Evans volunteered for many organizations, including the Lorain Public Library where she taught Adult Literacy for many years. Mrs. Evans was a member of Second Baptist Church, where she attended until her health began to decline.

At Second Baptist, she served on the Missionary Society and was a member of the 50+ Club. She was Past Matron of Martha Chapter #35 O.E.S – PHA. To her pride and delight, in June, 2017 the Grand Worthy Matron and her court travelled to Mrs. Evans’s home to present her with her 35-year pin.

Affectionately known as O’Mae, she was a mother to the community. She opened her doors and heart to many children and young adults throughout the years. Everyone knew they could always come to O’Mae for a good meal, a place to stay, or just someone to talk to.

O’Mae loved, and was loved by too many to individually name! Her hobbies included working crossword puzzles, crocheting, entertaining and watching LeBron James play basketball. In addition to her parents and loving husband James Sr. (Bro), she is preceded in death by her brother, James Cooper and sisters Elnora Render and Vernell Burke.

She leaves behind to mourn her passing her two sons James Jr. ‘Petey’ of Brooklyn, OH, Robert (Sheryl) of Savannah, GA and her loving daughter Joanie, who was her primary caregiver; 4 grandchildren: James III (Tre’) and Alexander Evans, both of Lorain, Eric G. Evans of Germany, and Savannah A. Evans, of Atlanta GA and 1 great-grandchild: Arica Toni Evans of Lorain, OH; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A special thank-you to her Home Health Aide, Jasmine Colvin. Visitation will be Thursday from 6 to 8 PM, with an Eastern Star Burial Service at 7:00 PM.

The funeral will be held Friday at 11:30 AM. All services will be at Second Baptist Church, 300 W 13th Street, Lorain Ohio 44052. Pastor Loversier Lewis will officiate.
