Paul Clayton Gebhardt. Sr., 89, of Concord, passed away Wednesday, August 29th, 2018 at Carillon Assisted Living in Harrisburg. The family will receive friends and family on Sunday, September 2nd, 2018 from 2:00pm to 3:00pm at Hartsell Funeral Homes, 460 Branchview Drive, NE Concord, NC 28025.

Immediately following will be a memorial service officiated by Chaplain, Rich Felts, D.Min. He was preceded in death by his son, Paul Clayton Gebhardt, Jr. of Harrisburg, NC and sister, Carolyn Floridia of Natick, MA. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betsy Dumas Gebhardt of Concord; Son, Peter Allan and wife Donna Gebhardt of Harrisburg; Son, David Blair and wife Janine Gebhardt of Concord; Daughter in law, Valerie Gebhardt of Harrisburg; Granddaughter, Ashlyn Blair and husband Erick Daniels of Sherrills Ford; Grandson, Christopher M. Gebhardt of Mooresville; Granddaughter, Heather Nicole and husband Cole Hensley of Monroeville, PA.

Also surviving is one sister, Janette Hancock of Natick, MA. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude for the outpouring of love and support from family and friends during this difficult time. In addition, the family is sincerely thankful for the care provided by the staff at Hospice and Palliative Care of Lake Norman and Carillon Assisted Living of Harrisburg.

Paul began his career with Waltham Watch Company; followed by Raytheon Company in developing the protype of the Sparrow & Hawk Missiles. He later worked for Hughes Aircraft in California and transitioned to IBM where he retired in 1990. He was an engineer and specialist in currency and ATM’s.

During his 29-year career with IBM he was given a one-year temporary assignment. The assignment involved travelling extensively to foreign countries, where he worked with their government as well as the U.S Treasury in developing new currency that fed through ATM machines. At the time, he was only 1 of 5 in the world with this knowledge.

The special assignment lasted 20 plus years. After retirement, he volunteered at the Cabarrus County Senior Center, The Department of Aging, The Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP), and Meals on Wheels. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to Hospice & Palliative Care Lake Norman, 705 Griffith Street Suite 203 Davidson, NC 28036 Hartsell Funeral Home of Concord is serving the Gebhardt family.
