Paul D. “The Dude” Whipple, 66, of Burlington passed away on July 14, 2018 at the Burlington Care Center. He was born on July 6, 1952 in Mt. Pleasant, son of John E. Whipple and Gloria (White) Whipple.

He attended Mt. Pleasant High School and SCC. He was eventually employed as a machinist at General Electric for 25 years until his retirement in 2014.

He took pride in his work and wanted to be remembered as always doing his best. Paul had a generous nature. An avid outdoorsman he was a frequent donor to the Sierra Club and the Iowa National Heritage Foundation.

He enjoyed stargazing, hunting, fishing, canoeing and rock hunting, especially for geodes. Survivors include three sisters, Cindi Woline (Dennis) of Des Moies, Dawn Carter (Stephen) of Conifer, CO, and Joan Brown (Steven) of Keokuk, a half-sister, Wendy O’Neil (Tim) of Pierz, MN, and half-brother, John P. Whipple (Susie) of Blaine, MN. He is also survived by cousins, numerous nieces and nephews, aunts and an uncle.

He is preceded in death by his parents and step-parents. A memorial gathering with family and friends is being planned for sometime later this year. Memorials may be made to Iowa Public Television or the Iowa National Heritage Foundation.
