OBITUARY Shirley Ann Harrington June 30, 1935 – September 11, 2018 Shirley Ann (Agan) Harrington, 83, died on September 11, 2018. Shirley was an only child and was born on June 30, 1935 in Chariton, Iowa. Shirley was a daughter, a wife, mother of 5, grandmother of 10, great grandmother of 11, and a great- great grandmother of 2.

Shirley loved her animals, and taught all people to love animals. Shirley always had animals in her life, dogs, cats, horses, goats, and many others and if you could make a pet out of it Shirley did it. She stated many times that, as an only child, her animals were her best friends and that animals were better than people, sometimes.

A kinder person you will never meet. Animals have lost their best friend. Shirley was an accomplished pianist and organist and could play everything from Gospel to Boogie Woogie.

Shirley chose the songs for her funeral and liked all music. Shirley ran a daycare in her home for many years, and was also a “Mom” to many of her daycare children as well as her many in-laws. Shirley loved children and she loved seeing them as adults too.

She was so happy when former daycare kids would stop and visit. The kids loved her too. She always had a hug for anyone and everyone got a hug too.

Funeral services will be held at the Ankeny Funeral Home (515) 964-4674, 1510 W. 1st street, Ankeny, Iowa 50023, at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, September 29, 2018. Following the funeral Shirley’s ashes will be spread at the scattering garden in the Glendale Cemetery, 4909 University Ave, Des Moines, Iowa 50311. After that a lunch will be served at the Ramada Inn (515) 964-1717 restaurant, The Ankeny Diner (515) 964-7851, 133 SE Delaware Avenue, Ankeny Iowa 50021.

Please feel free to go to The Ankeny Diner directly after the service where snacks and beverages will be served. After the scattering of the ashes at the cemetery a full lunch will be served. It was Shirley’s wishes that everyone wear comfortable clothes.

Shirley met the love of her life, Gerald “Jerry” Francis Harrington. They were married on September 25, 1954. Shirley and Jerry met on the loop in Des Moines, on Grand and Locust Streets, Downtown Des Moines, Iowa.

They were married for 62 and ½ years. Shirley and Jerry had 5 boys, William Gerald Harrington, 63 of Des Moines, Iowa. Steven Michael Harrington, 61 of Lisbon Falls, Maine.

David Gabrial Harrington, 57 of Chuluota, Florida. Andrew Joseph Harrington, 56 of Ankeny, Iowa. Timothy Leo Harrington, 54 of Goshen, Arkansas.

Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Gerald “Jerry” Harrington (1935-2016), her parents William Agan (1905-1980) and Arwilda “Wilda” (Bond) Agan, (1906-1958) her in-laws, Leo Harrington (1910-1967) and Marie (Harlan) Harrington (1912-1992), grandchild Adam Harrington (1975-2007) two sister in-laws Julia (Harrington) Keller (1934-2018) and Virgina (Tilton) Harrington (1934-2010), two brother in-laws Daniel Harrington (1938-1993) and William Harrington (1945-2011) Shirley is survived by all 5 sons, daughters-in-laws, grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, and many other relatives.
